The Dutch conquest of Java was the process of Dutch conquest and gradual colonization of the Island of Java that occurred between the early 17th century and the mid-19th century. The Dutch sought to control this lucrative and strategic island. The conquest of Java, part of the broader theater of Dutch colonial campaigns, was frequently interrupted by both foreign interventions and internal rebellions, resulting in a slow process. Ultimately, the Dutch secured their position in the region until the onset of World War II, which eventually led to the end of Dutch rule in the 1949.
