Professional career
[edit]Carroll earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Kenyon College in 1998.[1] At Kenyon College, Carroll found a mentor in Carol Schumacher. In 2002, she earned her Master’s in Mathematics at the University of Nebraska and in 2008, she was awarded her Ph.D. in the subject from the Georgia Institute of Technology.[2] Her dissertation Enumerative Combinatorics of Posets was supervised by Prasad V. Tetali.[2] She was promoted to full professor and department head at Emory and Henry College in 2023.
Work and Awards
[edit]Carroll's work includes research in the field of combinatorics and combinatorial aspects of partially ordered sets.[1] She has also posed a question that opened up a previously unexplored area of combinatorics that explores the subsets of partially ordered sets.
Another thread of Carroll's work deals with ancient mathematics and how some ancient societies used it. In particular, she studies and conduct research Egyptian fractions and has published Count Like an Egyptian: A Hands-on Introduction to Ancient Mathematics.[3]
Carroll is also interested in exploring how mathematics can highlight and quantify legal or systemic injustice or inequality and teaches a class on this topic at Emory and Henry. She also explores the gender bias in the academic field and has published The Elephant (-Sized Belly) in the Room which details her experience searching for a job while pregnant.[4]
