[edit]

Hi Schoolskater, it's a pleasure to have you onboard. Before we begin, I am going to ask you a few questions:

 1. Do you want to be called Schoolskater, or do you want me to call you by your first name?
 2. What country are you from (for timings)?
 3. Is there anything you especially want covered?
 4. What colour do you want this page?
 5. Do you mind hatnotes (such as at the bottom of my userpage)?

Thanks, Matty.007 16:38, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

 1. You can just call me Andy
 2. I'm from America
 3. How to spot vandalism
 4. Purples okay.
 5. I dont mind.

Changed to light purple (darker ruins my signature, and we don't want that :) ). Please answer below my queries and sign with 4 tildes {~~~~). Nothing more trivial you want covered first (signature, userpage) is there? Always nice to ease in gently if there is, if there's not don't worry. Thanks, Matty.007 19:41, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Userpage

Sure, I'd like to learn how to make my userpage more advanced. Thanks, Andy

Schoolskater: OK, so to create a hatnote, put at the top and collapse bottom at the bottom of the hat. I advise you create a navigational bar; as much for your use as for visitor's. Create User:Schoolskater/Navigation with the content in User:Matty.007/Navigation, making sure you credit the person you got it off (me) in the same place as the person I got it off (Excirial). The first block of list is the pictures, so:

<td width="8%" align="center"></td>

The only bit in that that bothers you is the "image=Early light heron fishing.jpg" and "link=User:Matty.007". Change the link to wherever you want it, and the image from Commons without the 'File:'. If you do that quickly I'll have a look today, if not I'll have a look tomorrow. Thanks, Matty.007 19:41, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Whoa. Could we take it piece by piece please? Andy

OK, so copy and paste all the stuff in User:Matty.007/Navigation into User:Schoolskater/Navigation. I'm going off wiki for today now, but will help more tomorrow. Thanks, Matty.007 19:53, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Schoolskater: please sign with four tildes (press Shift+#, which gets ~, and do four of them). Go onto Commons, and find two pictures your like to link to your user page and talk page. Thanks, Matty.007 11:01, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Okay so I found two pictures, but where do I link them and how do I link them? Schoolskater (talk) 13:17, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Schoolskater: put :File:Filename.filetype. Thanks, Matty.007 13:25, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Ok, so I get that part, but how do I link it to my talk and userpage? Schoolskater (talk) 13:32, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Link them here and I'll show you (or you can try first: put the Picturename.jpg in the "image=" part on User:Schoolskater/Navigation). Thanks, Matty.007 13:36, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Okay, this one is for the userpage-Bring-Me-The-Horizon And this one is for the Talk page- VicFuentes Thanks Schoolskater (talk) 13:44, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Make sure you don't forget the : when talking about images or categories (looks like :File:Bring-Me-The-Horizon.jpg, otherwise you add that category/image rather than simply linking to it. Working on navigation now... Thanks, Matty.007 13:46, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
OK, done with slightly larger images than on my template so they are visible. Is that OK, can we move on or do you want something else for your userpage? Thanks, Matty.007 13:49, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Okay, I added the same navigation bar to my talk page. Whats next? Thanks, Schoolskater (talk) 13:50, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Yeah that's it for the user page right now. Whats next on our schedule? Schoolskater (talk) 13:52, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

I've seen that you're a fairly new editor (131 edits), but what do you know about editing Wikipedia (sorry if this sounds offensive, just trying to guage where we are)? Do you understand the watchlist, wikimarkup... Thanks, Matty.007 13:54, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

I know how to set up wikilinks to link things to another article. I know how to edit articles to make them more organized, For example, bolding the section headlines, or italicizing things. I know how to send things and ask for admins help. I'm a Teahouse host, except I'm not that good at. I know how to do the basics really. I did the Wikipedia adventure thing on the teahouse page. Schoolskater (talk) 14:38, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

To be honest, I would say a Teahouse host needed a few thousand edits first so that they had some all round knowledge. So, do you understand the following:
 • Watchlist
 • Contributions
 • Page history
 • Signature

Thanks, Matty.007 14:42, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes I understand all of them. And I assume by signature your meaning my Username. correct? Schoolskater (talk) 14:45, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, I mean the tildes you sign with (just username is 3 tildes, 4 is username and time, I think 5 is just time). What stuff do you think you need to know? Thanks, Matty.007 14:47, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Well what are some other things that you could show me how to do. I'm willing to do it all. Schoolskater (talk) 15:45, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

I saw you wanted to do userboxes. That Ok, then moving onto templates? Thanks, Matty.007 16:23, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Sure we'll do userboxes and then templates. Oh and look at my edits to this article, 944 Cup. I added a new section and tried to help and fix it. Will you tell me if its good please? Thanks, Schoolskater (talk) 16:29, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, "As a general rule, the "See also" section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes" means that not all the links you gave should really be there, especially given that the article is so short. If it was lengthier, maybe, but not right now. By NASA I presume you meant National Auto Sport Association? The wikilinking you've done is excellent. Thanks, Matty.007 16:40, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback! So whats first on userboxe making? Schoolskater (talk) 16:44, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Userboxes

No anythings fine. SkaterLife (talk) 12:26, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Userboxes

[edit]

Create the page you want the userbox to be at at something useful, such as User:Matty.007/userboxes/You can never have too many Userboxes (changing the username and the 'You can never...). Paste the following: (it makes more sense and is on individual lines if you go into edit mode on this page to read that).

 • border-c:border
 • border-s:border width (pixels)
 • id-c:id background color, easier to use a # colour from [1]
 • id-s:id text size in points
 • id-fc:id font color, easier to use a # colour from [2]
 • info-c:info background color
 • info-s:info text size in points
 • info-fc:info font color
 • id:id image and/or text
 • info:info text and/or image

I just got those definitions from Template:Userbox, but I found that confusing, so you might. Basically, play around with those parameters I gave you and see what happens; that's what I did. Thanks, Matty.007 16:58, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

I DID IT!!! Thanks you!!! I'm ready to move onto templates if that's ok. Schoolskater (talk) 17:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Well done! Just as a note, it is easier to create at a subpage (User:Schoolskater/userboxes/PTV. Paste the info there, then put on your userpage where you want the userbox. Thanks, and well done again, Matty.007 17:53, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Templates

[edit]

Ok, so onto templates. Whats the first thing about em?Schoolskater (talk) 18:48, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Give me a few days off to work on other things (His Last Vow and User:Matty.007/sandbox/List of Kingstonian F.C. seasons if you wanted to know)... You are watching this page, aren't you? Thanks, Matty.007 18:51, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Yeah I'm watching this page. And so just let me know when the next lesson is. Schoolskater (talk) 18:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey. So can we start the templates now? Schoolskater (talk) 15:07, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

I usually post new things ~weekly for adoption, so give me a day or two to write the thing. Thanks, Matty.007 16:44, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Coming soon, don't worry. Thanks for helping at the Teahouse, but I would appreciate it if you didn't volunteer me to adopt people (there is a page, WP:Adoption), I will probably take it case by case, and given that I already have two adoptees... Thanks, Matty.007 18:58, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Are you just really busy?SkaterLife (talk) 15:32, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Not on Wikipedia much at the minute. OK, templates. If you see curly brackets, Template name, that means that inside the brackets is a template. So for example, my archives template is at User:Matty.007/template/Archives template. If I want that to appear without all the code being on this page, I put . In mainspace, templates have the prefix 'Template', such as Template:Kingstonian F.C.. The curly brackets mean that if the prefix is there, the 'Template' prefix isn't needed. If a template says on it 'This template should always be substituted, i.e. use . Any accidental transclusions will be automatically substituted by a bot.' then the prefix 'subst:' is needed, so Template:Welcome, as it says, would be nowiki. Square brackets (Like these) link to templates, curly brackets show the page without all the markup. Does my explanation need work? Thanks, Matty.007 16:35, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Your explanation just needs to be organized. Like in bullet points.SkaterLife (talk) 16:37, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Oh. wait I get it. Also, how can I put an info box with edit counts on my page like yours has? SkaterLife (talk) 16:38, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

So templates OK? That was a script by Technical 13, but it seems to glitch out on counting mainspace edits, so I will update it manually at some point (may as well be now). If you look at my User:Matty.007/common.js (yours is at User:SkaterLife/common.js, the line mw.loader.load( 'https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=User:Technical_13/Scripts/Edit_counter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' ); is the script. However, I don't really understand scripts, they aren't vital but if you want to learn about them, ask T13 or someone else you think looks very technical. Thanks, Matty.007 16:50, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
The 5 Pillars

So whats next?

Do you want to do anything in particular Andy? Thanks, Matty.007 16:20, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

No. Anythings fine. SkaterLife (talk) 17:37, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

OK, 5 pillars of Wikipedia coming up (used before if you want to have a look at their answers, but I would prefer if you didn't until after answering the questions). Thanks, Matty.007 16:32, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
May I strongly advise you not to edit at UAA or other anti-vandal editors until you have some more experience gained with User talk:TheQ Editor/CVUA/SkaterLife. Thanks, Matty.007 16:55, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Will you help me Archive my talkpage real quick? Please? SkaterLife (talk) 16:34, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Summary:

1. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and it combines several features. However, it is not the place for putting your point of view, advertising or promoting yourself, and it has certain guidelines.

2. Articles are to be written from a neutral point of view, with veritable sources, i.e. not opinions, interpretations or experience.

3. On Wikipedia, you don't own articles, it is free content to be edited and re-distributed.

4. Treat fellow editors with respect-avoid personal attacks, assume good faith, do not edit to make a point

5. The rules are not carved in stone:the rules evolve, and as such, do not worry too much about mistakenly breaking some in good faith.

Questions-/10

[edit]

1. You have been told by a friend that there was a record heatwave in London yesterday. Could you add this to an article? Explain

 • No. You could only add it if you have an actual reliable source.

2. You see a great article on the BBC website about Farage's victory in the European elections. You decide that it is so good, it deserves a Wikipedia page. You copy the page, and create a Wikipedia article, and paste it there. Is this the right thing to do? Explain

 • No, this is not right because your plagiarizing someone else's work. Also there could already be a page about Farage, And you could put info into there as long as you cite it.

3. You think that the article on Germany is not showing enough about the fascinating workings of the TV service. You edit in how you know it works, helping people with your review of the service. Is this right? Explain

 • No. Because you are promoting the TV Service.

4. You get a book autographed by Dan Brown (if that's your thing) at a book fair in Stockholm, so edit his page saying where he was and what he was doing. Is this right? Explain

 • I'm pretty sure that its acceptable as long as you provide proof.

5. You create a page on your sandbox about the environment of Spain. You go back a couple of days later, and find it has been copied, and created by another user. Is this right? Explain

 • Technically yes, because no one owns the articles created on Wikipedia.

6. You see some text shamelessly copied from one of your articles on a leading news site. You consider action, as they have not acknowledged using your page! What should you do? Explain

 • You should ask them to cite their source. But theres not really anything more you could do after that, since no one owns the articles on Wikipedia.

7. A user swears all over your userpage (it happens) for undoing his edits to a page. Do you do the same to him? Explain

 • NO NO NO NO NO! You should never do the same! You should report the user and let an administrator handle it. If you swear back, it will end up that both you and the other editor is blocked.

8. A new user has completely changed one of the articles you created, so you undo his edits, then post a vandalism warning on his user page. Is this right? Explain

 • No, (I've done this before) You should check to see if the edits are vandalism and if they are add the warning, if their not, and they are good faith edits, revert them.

9. You make a mistake, copying an article from the STV website onto a Wikipedia article. What can you do?

 • You can revert the edit.

10. You see an obviously vandalized article on something you know nothing about. Do you change it back again? Explain

 • Yes you change it back as long as the edit that you changed it back to is not vandalism.
SkaterLife: may I advise you not to advertise your age on Wikipedia/internet? Also, when you've finished the questions do you want a lesson on formatting? Thanks, Matty.007 16:04, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

Very good replies, just a few quibbles with minor things:

 • With 4, a book signing isn't really notable so probably doesn't require mentioning
 • With 5, we try and credit proper authors, using the page history (which you know about?). You can ask an admin for a history merge to receive credit for what you wrote
 • With 6, that is right: a short while ago, a Wikipedia friend's work was copied, see this. However, I don't think they are allowed to change the license, and I am unsure if they can profit from it
 • With 8, I think you are assuming the edits weren't beneficial, which is fine. It's good to see that you are learning from your mistakes.

Sterling answers, well done! Thanks, Matty.007 14:23, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

SL (if you don't mind me calling you that): have you seen this essay, aimed a little lower in terms of age, but still applicable? Thanks, Matty.007 14:29, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't mind you calling me SL at all, Its fine. And I read the essay. I also took you advice and removed the comment I added about what grade I'm in. So, are we all done with this? Can we move on to formatting?☯SkaterLife☯ talk 14:34, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Good, I saw (just asking w.Carter to remove a repeat of your statement). Part of the reason is fairly obvious, internet predators. The other is that it can harm what you want to do on Wikipedia: I saw an editor in good standing, 20,000 edits going for adminship, and part of the reason people opposed was the reason he admitted he was under 18. Anyhow, formatting next (try and stay out of trouble for the next few days whilst I write it). Thanks, Matty.007 14:54, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
SkaterLife: saying on a page with 650 people watching it you are still at school may be something you want to remove. It's your choice, but bear in mind that essay. Thanks, Matty.007 17:11, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Schoolskater, I am very sorry to tell you that I am likely to retire from Wikipedia in the next few days (I will put a more detailed explanation on my talk page). Thank you very much for being a great adoptee, I very much hope you continue with Wikipedia. I will continue to edit sporadically, though nothing near daily-if you wish me to continue posting lessons I can try. I may return in a few months, but I am currently not expecting to. All the best, Matty.007 07:37, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
