NOPES new article content ...
NOPES, or "non-organic, psychiatric ear syndrome" is an umbrella term describing a wide variety of non-organic clinical complaints relating to the external ear, middle ear or inner ear apparatus. This collection of complaints is a diagnosis of exclusion and may only be applied when all organic causes have been appropriately ruled out.
Complaints seen in association with NOPES may include aural fullness, itching of the external auditory canal, dizziness or any of a number of other symptoms. Ringing in the ear(s), or tinnitus, does not fall within the spectrum of NOPES, even in the case of subjective tinnitus.
