What is the Muscular System?

The muscles and skeletal system form the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system has an interconnection of the muscles and the skeleton. The nervous system controls the interconnection of the musculoskeletal system[1]. Hence, the movement of the muscles and skeletal system is conducted through voluntary and involuntary impulses that come from the nervous system. For instance, the movement of the heart muscles happens through involuntary impulses triggered by the nervous system.

Types of Muscles

Skeletal muscles are specialized tissues on bones and facilitate movement and holding of bones in place in the body. The combination of skeletal muscles and bones creates the locomotor system due to movement[2]. The skeletal muscles work in pairs that are opposing each other. This explains the presence of the biceps and triceps of the upper arm. The biceps are at the front, while the triceps are at the back of the upper arm. Skeletal muscles movement is due to conscious control. Thus, the skeletal muscles are voluntary.

Smooth muscles are found in the lining of different body parts[3]. For instance, the digestive tract, blood vessels, and uterus have smooth muscles. The movement of smooth muscle is not controlled consciously.

The cardiac muscle is the muscle that makes up the heart. The cardiac muscles relax and contract through the involutary process caused by electric impulses caused by the nervous system[4]. Thus, the movement of the cardiac muscles is involuntary.

Muscle strength grows based on the work the muscles do. Engagement in exercises assists bodybuilders to gain muscle mass through constant weight lifting to facilitate the growth of their muscles[5]. The more the exercise of muscles and eat appropriate food for muscle growth, the more the muscles grow subsequently. The strength of muscle fibers also depends on the exercises one does regularly to improve elasticity and contraction. That is why people of all ages are encouraged to exercise to keep the muscles functioning and reduce wear or tear.
