This is a page for the collation of sources and arguments that James Clerk Maxwell had British nationality.
Its aim it to demonstrate to Arbcom that the argument for Maxwell's nationality being British is well supported by reliable sources and logical arguments. It is not intended or expected that Arbcom will arbitrate on the matter of Maxwell's nationality but it is important to show that the argument for stating that his nationality is British is as well or better supported by reliable sources than the argument that it is Scottish.
Please do not put counterarguments or comments on this page (they will be deleted), there are plenty of venues for discussion

[edit]The British Nationality Act 1981
Summary of British nationality by the British Government
Arguments
[edit]The British Nationality Act 1981 does not specifically mention the word 'nationality' except in the title, if it did it would be decisive, but it is quite clear that all the categories within the act are types of British nationality. This is condidered too obvious to state explicitly but the clue is in the title. See History of British nationality law.
The British government summary of British nationality is similar in that nowher in the text does it say that anyone has British nationality, obviously because everyone covered by the summary had or has British nationality. The summary deals only with British nationals.
That the above souces deal with types of British Nationality is, however, made quite clear by the British Govenment overview.
There is no mention of English Scottish or Welsh nationality at all in the British Nationality Act 1981 or the summary although 'English subject' is mentioned in a historical (before the Acts of Union 1707) context.
