Sands Street was named after Joshua Sands, a wealthy merchant who along with his brother, Comfort Sands had extensive landholdings in early Brooklyn. Sands Street once had the reputation for being the red-light district of Brooklyn and carried the haunting name, "Hell's Half Acre."[1]
Evans Street was named after Captain Samuel Evans, who worked as Captain Commandant at the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard, along with John Little, they established a ferry that ran from the Navy Yard area to New York.[1]
Little Street was named in honor of John Little, a Tavern owner, who was responsible for establishing a ferry from the base of Little Street in Brooklyn to Walnut Street in New York.[1]
