Mike Applegate, full name Michael Emanuel Applegate, was born in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. at Kings County Hospital in 1952. He spent his formative years in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and attended Lindenhurst Senior High School from 1966-1970. Immediately upon graduating high school in July of 1970 he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17, reaching the highest enlisted rank of the U.S. Navy, Master Chief Petty Officer (Pay Grade E-9) in the rating of Legalman in 1992. His duties in the U.S. Navy were primarily in the Administrative, Legal, and Security related fields. Senior Chief Applegate was the first Command Senior Chief (Senior Enlisted Advisor) of Naval Support Activity, Gaeta, Italy. In 1992 Master Chief Applegate was first the Legalman in the U.S. Navy to be designated a Notary Public by the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, a position up to then normally held only by commissioned officers. This nomination was a direct result of a point paper he prepared pointing out that the Uniform Code of Military Justice allowed for such nominations, but the Navy traditionally didn't abide by it, relying instead on an elitist view that only commissioned officers could be notaries. Today all Legalmen in the U.S. Navy are Notary Publics while serving on active duty in their ratings. He graduated from University of Laverne (California) in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in Management. His shore duty stations included:

Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois (Basic Training/Boot Camp); Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Maryland (YN/PN A School); Air Antisubmarine Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN, Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island (YN3/YN2) ; Commander Sixth Fleet Staff embarked on the USS SPRINGFIELD (CLG-7) and USS LITTLE ROCK (CLG-4); Naval Support Activity, Naples, Italy; Naval Station, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Navy-Marine Corps Trial Judiciary Atlantic, Naples, Italy; Naval Legal Service Office, Naples, Italy; Naval Air Station, Sigonella, Italy; Naval Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut (Command Chief/Senior Enlisted Advisor); Naval Support Activity Detachment, Gaeta, Italy; Naval Support Activity Security Detachment, Naples, Italy (Leading Chief/Motor Vehicle Registration Supervisor for Italy). He served aboard the following ships: USS INTREPID (CVS-11); USS LITTLE ROCK (CLG-4); USS SPRINGFIELD (CLG-7); USS PUGET SOUND (AD-38); and USS LASALLE (AGF-7).

Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1994, he worked as a Professor of English in the University of Laverne's English as a Second Language program in Gaeta, Italy. He then enrolled in Trinity College of Vermont as a full-time student from 1997-1999 and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education as well as being awarded a State Teacher's License from the State of Vermont. In 2000 he was hired by Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to work at the U.S. Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, as a 4th grade teacher, where he still teaches. In 2009 He was awarded Teacher of the Year of the Japan District by the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Department of Pacific. He currently serves as the Post Judge Advocate for VFW Post 1054 in Yokosuka, Japan, and is a Life Member.

He is a part-time professional magician performing under the stage name of "Magic Mike" in the Kanto Plain Region (Yokohama/Tokyo) of Japan. He was the first magician to ever perform a magic show at sea on the USS Kitty Hawk, an aircraft carrier on a cruse in the Pacific Ocean in 2006. He is married to Madeleine Marinduque Applegate, a resident of the Province of Isabela in the Philippines.
