Early life

[edit]

Lourdes Casal was born in 1938 in the province of Havana, Cuba. From a very young age, Casal believed that knowledge and education could pave the road to success. Her parents, who were both professionals, encouraged and supported Casal’s academic achievement. Casal’s mother was an elementary-school teacher and her father, Pedro Casal, was a physician and dentist. Lourdes Casal attended a Catholic University in Havana, where she obtained a degree in chemical engineering. By the time she graduated from college, Cuba had become a communist country under Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. In disagreement with Castro’s regime, Casal participated in numerous anti-revolutionary manifestations. In 1962, she migrated to the United States and settled in New York.
