Gaetano Valeri

[edit]

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Gaetano Valeri ( September 21, 1760 -  April 13, 1822 ) Born in Padua, Italy was an Italian composer, organist and pianist. After studying art he received musical instruction from F.G. Turini at the basilica of S Giustina in Padua and became organist at the churches of S Maria del Carmine and S Agostino. He was known as an excellent pianist, a reputation which his own piano works substantiate. In addition to his sonatas for two and four hands, a group of 15 piano cadenzas reveal a formidable technique.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Gaetano Valeri first worked at the Basillca del Carmine earlier in his career. Most of Valeri's composition that have been saved are sacred works written for Padua Cathedral, which he served for about 35 years. From December 1, 1785 to January 20, 1803, he was the Cathedral's organist.[2] Many of his liturgical works were first written for SATB or mixed choir and later rewritten for men's chorus. Valeri's accompaniments would usually include large orchestra or wind band but sometimes reworked for small ensemble or organ alone. [3]

On August 9, 1805, he became Kapellmeister, famous for Sonatas for Organ composed of a two-and rarely three movements. A dozen were published in 1785 and reprinted three times during his lifetime. Valeri composed little for the theatre, but his short Il trionfo di Alessandro sopra se stesso (given at Padua in 1792) is unusual: its libretto, recalling that of Rousseau's Pigmalion, not only gives the dialogue and describes the stage actions of the singers, but indicates the length (from a few seconds to several minutes) of 40 passages of music and characterizes the music as it changes during the opera's 11 scenes.[4]

Maestro di Cappella at the Padova Dome, composer, pianist, but also teacher and painter: he has been an important figure in Padova’s cultural life between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.[5] He quietly spent most of his time in his hometown until his death: a young gifted, curious, diligent man, at the beginning more oriented towards fine arts than music, who integrated himself without any problems in the musical tissue of his town.
