Angelika Platen (born in 1942 in Heidelberg) is a German photographer known for her artist portraits.
Biography
[edit]Angelika Platen studied Art History and Romance & Oriental studies at the Free University of Berlin. She then specialized in Photography at the School of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
In 1968, she established herself as an independent photographer and photojournalist. She displayed her photographs for the first time in 1969 in an exhibition entitled « Artists are also humans ».
From 1972 to 1975, she managed the Günter Sachs Gallery in Hamburg. During this period, she photographed more than sixty artists. Her passion for artist’s portraits was born.
To highlight their art, the painters, sculptors, and conceptual artists were photographed within their artistic contexts, chosen by Angelika Platen. Many of these young artists in the 1970’s are now world-renowned. To name but a few, Angelika Platen photographed Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Walter de Maria, Dan Flavin, Richard Hamilton, Robert Rauschenberg, Günther Uecker, Andy Warhol, and Ben.
At the end of the 1970’s, Angelika Platen moved to Paris and became the director of marketing and communication of an industrial company. She put her photography career temporarily on hold to take care of her family.
In 1997, Angelika Platen, reignited her passion for photography. In 1998 she displayed her portraits taken between 1968 and 1972 at the Modern Art Museum of Frankfurt and published the book « Platen Artists » (Edition Stemmle), documenting her work from the 1970’s.
Since 1998, Angelika Platen has taken photographs of many new artists such as Thomas Struth, Neo Rauch, John Armleder and Jeff Koons. She released a book in 2003 with a series of portraits taken of Sigmar Polke entitled « Sigmar Polke – Mitten in der Luft » with a text written by Günter Engelhard.
Two years later this series of photographs were shown at the Haus am Lützowplatz in Berlin, then in Aix La Chapelle and in Prague in 2006.
Angelika still lives between France and Germany and continues to take portraits of artists.
She plans to show some of her work and her collections in various exhibitions in 2017.
