Article Evaluation of Nursing Research

[edit]
  • The article stays mainly on point. I was slightly distracted by their reference to the court system.
  • The article remains neutral throughout, but it seems to be focused on the UK and Wales rather than the United States.
  • All of the reference links worked and the websites were related to the subject of the article. Some of the sources were not reliable, however. For example, one of them was a blog post. No biases are noted in the article, but there should because the blog post is that author's opinion.
  • There is nothing on the talk page, but it says that the article was created as a part of WikiProject Nursing.
  • This article talks about similar things that we have discussed in class. This article is quite brief, though. Our class has gone into much more detail about the different types of research and the importance of nursing research.

Edits for Neonatal Sepsis Article

[edit]

A very large meta-analysis investigated the effect of probiotics on preventing late-onset sepsis (LOS) in neonates.[1] Probiotics were found to reduce the risk of LOS, but only in babies who were fed human milk exclusively.[2] It is diffiuclt to distinguish if the prevention was a result of the probiotic supplementaion or if it was a result of the properties of human milk. [3] It is also still unclear if probiotic administration reduces LOS risk in extremely low birth weight infants due to the limited number of studies that investigated it.[4] Out of the 37 studies included in this systematic review, none indicated any safety problems related to the probiotics. [5] It would be benefical to clarify the relationship between probiotic supplementation and human milk for future studies in order to prevent late onset sepsis in neonates.[6]

Reflective Essay

[edit]

During the article review, I learned that Wikipedia is a great resource that contains a myriad of information. Some articles were much more thorough than others, however. In critiquing an article, I found that one of the major problems was lack of citations or non-credible citations. In Wikipedia articles, it points out areas of concern and that’s how I chose what to add. I edited a Neonatal Sepsis article. I am interested in becoming a neonatal nurse, and I did not know a lot about sepsis in that population. I added information about probiotic supplementation as a way to prevent late onset sepsis in neonates. It was valuable because the article mentioned probiotics, but stated lack of research. The research I found was a systematic review that looked at over 30 studies, so it was valuable information that had statistically significant results. I noticed that the article was changed from a start-class to c-class rating. I did not receive any feedback from other users. This was a very different type of assignment that I had done in the past. It was challenging at first to grasp how to use Wikipedia. I have only ever experienced Wikipedia s someone reading it for information, rather than being the one contributing the information. It was a lot of power to have when I thought about how many people rely on Wikipedia to find reliable information. The learning modules were helpful for walking me through how to use Wikipedia, but they sometimes moved too quickly for me to follow. It was also hard that we never discussed the “in-class” sections actually in class. It is really exciting to think that I wrote on a topic that may relate to my nursing future. This assignment made me do really important research that resulted in me learning a lot about a topic I was unfamiliar with. Wikipedia provides the public with an easy and free way to explore different topics that they want to learn about. It is key to have that type of reliable resource for the public to gain knowledge.
