FDGB-Pokal
[edit]FDGB-Pokal review
[edit]In the FDGB-Pokal, all Oberliga sides joined at the third round only, as had been practiced last season. Magdeburg faced Oberliga side Empor Rostock. A nil-all draw after extra time in Rostock meant a replay in Magdeburg. This time Rostock won 2–1 in extra time, and Magdeburg were once again eliminated.

Match report
[edit]The goals
direct free kick, defender Faber slides into the ball and pushes it over the goal line.
37th: Frenzel receives a pass from Franke, goes past Magdeburg's defense and crosses for a finish from right winger Engelhardt.
39th: Stöcker starts a solo at the halfway-line, passes the ball to right winger Walter who scores with a fast low ball into the near corner of the goal.
74th: Hirschmann's freekick surprises Leipzig's defenders who are powerless to prevent Walter's second goal.
94th: Leipzig's goalkeeper Nauert cannot hold on to a powerful shot from Walter, Stöcker reacts quickly and scores the winning goal despite pressure from two Leipzig defenders.
The cup final, played 5 weeks after the end of the DDR-Oberliga saw the third-placed team of SC Leipzig play eleventh-placed SC Aufbau Magdeburg. Despite intense heat, Leipzig was in control from the start, with secure passing and well-executed moves, and their forwards put Magdeburg's shaky defense under intense pressure. Magdeburg lacked precise passing in midfield, as their midfielders were constantly pushed back to defend. Their forwards could not gain anything from the high crosses they were fed with. After Leipzig had quickly gained a 2-0 lead, everyone in the crowd believed in their victory. However, Walter's 39th minute goal brought about a change. Suddenly it was Leipzig who looked insecure and Magdeburg gained control of the match. After the break, Magdeburg's manager had made a change in his attack, moving Walter to play center forward. As both of Leipzig's halfbacks had suffered injuries, Magdeburg put on too much pressure for Leipzig's defense. Stöcker and Walter entered Leipzig's box again and again, and Magdeburg's equaliser in the 74th was well-deserved. Referee Kunze decided to add several minutes of injury time which Magdeburg used to score the winning goal in the 94th minute.
