DDR-Oberliga
[edit]As the DDR-Oberliga moved back to a fall-spring schedule, the 1961–62 season was extended and laste from March 1961 to June 1962. Teams played each other three times, with the third matches held on neutral grounds all over East Germany.
On the second matchday, Magdeburg manager Wittenbecher was faced with a problem. After he had used up his only substitution of an outfield player, replacing the injured Hermann Stöcker with Manfred Eckardt, Günter Hirschmann had been injured. The rules did however permit the substition of goalkeepers at any time – and so Hirschmann changed positions with goalkeeper Wolfgang Blochwitz and was promptly subbed for Helmut Schmidt who then switched with Blochwitz again. While the Berliner Zeitung merely mentioned the fact, football magazine Neue Fußballwoche criticized the manager for circumventing the rules.[3]

FDGB-Pokal
[edit]FDGB-Pokal review
[edit]In the FDGB-Pokal, Magdeburg only joined in the third round, as did all Oberliga sides. They were drawn against recently relegated Chemie Zeitz and won their match 5–3. In the fourth round, however, a 1–4 defeat against fellow Oberliga side SC Dynamo Berlin meant the end of the road in the cup competition. Nevertheless, this was the closest the club had gotten to a final appearance in its history.
