Hotschedules.com
Hotschedules.com is an online scheduling service for the restaurant industry. In 1999, the company started operations out of Texas in order to meet the challenges brought on by the high turnover and volatility of restaurant scheduling. According to the 2009 National Restaurant Association report, the restaurant industry employs 13 million people (9% of the total U.S. workforce) [1] giving hotschedules.com an enormous potential client base. The service enables rapid communication between all members of restaurant staff, including but not limited to, management, cooks, servers, and hosts. By providing features such as an online posted schedule of employees, contact information of said employees, intra-site messaging, and customizable text alerts to changes, hotschedules has created a fast and effective service that is revolutionary to the restaurant service industry. The mission statement provided by Hotschedules.com is to "improve online scheduling and management-employee communications, resulting in greater employee satisfaction, retention and a fast, proven ROI" [2]
The Company
[edit]Hotschedules was founded in Texas in 1999 and launched the first version of the website one year later in 2000 [3]. Since the launch, the company has grown by leaps and bounds, doubling revenue every year for the last three years.[4] [5]. The company offers solutions to fit any restaurant business whether it be a single restaurant or large chain [6]. In 2009, it was reported that Hotschedules.com was serving over 4,000 restaurants, 375,000 users [7]. The company strives to incorporate all aspects of restaurant management including the integrating/compatibility with several POS systems including MICROS, ALOHA
and POSitouch
[8].
The company has partnered with Decision Logic, Compeat, and Datafoundry to help compliment and improve services already offered [9].[8]
Services for the Management
[edit]Through the various features of Hotschedules.com, the restaurant owner gains many benefits in the areas of employee relationships and scheduling efficiency while at the same time, maintaining a low cost to the owner.
Features
[edit]These features include the ability to easily add or delete employees from the system without having to submit paperwork through any type of corporate bureaucracy. Employers can add employees to the schedule at any time, reducing the time wasted between hiring dates and start dates.
Hotschedules.com allows management to store and easily edit employee availability schedules. By storing this information in the same program that is used in writing the schedule, time is saved by cutting out cross-referencing. Facility in editing employee availability helps management in keeping track of changes. Similarly, Hotschedules.com organizes and stores employee contact information (including phone numbers, e-mail, and address) giving the management several ways to get in touch with any employee in seconds.
Through the site, the management can create access to training videos and exercises. This allows the management to provide the training video to every employee (with internet access) simultaneously. The employees can then complete the video or exercise without management having to schedules times and dates for each employee.
Benefits
[edit]Although somewhat self-explanatory, the some of the benefits provided by the features described above are listed here.
- Hotschedules.com can reduce the time it takes to produce a schedule by 75%.
- Since the program is online, schedules are paperless, which saves on printing costs.
- Communication with employees outside of the restaurant can be instant with email or text messages alerts. [10]
Services for the Employees
[edit]Hotschedules allows the employees of a restaurant much more flexibility with their job and facilitates communication with other employees as well as management with an easy online interface.
Features
[edit]Employees can use Hotschedules.com in several ways to alter, update, or check their schedules. Any computer (or phone, there is a hotschedules iphone app.) with internet access gives employees the opportunity to review their schedule and the schedules of other employees. The site provides a calendar feature that employees can use to request day off, certain shifts, or ask to work during a certain time. Releasing a scheduled shift or proposing a shift trade can be done with a few clicks of the mouse. If the shift change is cleared by management, employees can set customizable text alerts to tell them when this happens. The messaging function allows employees to contact any and everyone working for the restaurant. Messages can be sent to one specific employee or the entire waiting staff if desired.
