Western New Jersey, comprised of Hunterdon, Warren, and Sussex counties, is currently served solely by a patchwork system of infrequent local buses, dial-a-rides, and commuter buses. Large swaths of this area go unserved, and many areas are served in an inefficient manner. Of the three counties, only Hunterdon has a true bus system, the Hunterdon LINK. Warren and Sussex have small systems of shuttles that do not serve most of the counties. In addition, NJ Transit Rail service to this region is far from good, consisting of peak-only lines that cater nearly exclusively to commuters. While this area is rural, it still has some larger towns, and these are mostly disconnected from each other. This proposed Western Jersey Transit Redesign vastly improves the existing bus system, extends rail services, and introduces microtransit. This is all achieved while maintaining the same number of total vehicles for the bus system across the three counties (68).
