On May 26, 2017, James E. Cason was appointed to serve as Associate Deputy Secretary for the Department of the Interior for the second time, the first appointment occurring in August 2001 under the George W. Bush administration.
From February 2005 to March 2007, Cason was tasked as the acting Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. He served in that capacity for about 2 years. During that time, he worked extensively on a variety of Indian issues including management reforms, internal control improvements, law enforcement, land management and reducing land fractionation, trust responsibilities, historical trust accounting, probate and Indian education. From March 2007 until the end of the Bush Administration, Cason was tasked as the acting Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management and Budget. After leaving Federal Service in 2009, he served as Senior Member of the Energy, Transportation and Environment Team at Booz Allen Hamilton. In 2012, he left that position to join Kelly, Anderson & Associates, Inc where he served as Executive Vice President and Principal of Energy and Alternative Energy.
Before returning to Interior in 2001, Jim was vice president of risk management for the Niagara Falls, N .Y.–based Unifrax Corporation, and international manufacturing firm specializing in energy saving products. Jim managed the corporation’s health, safety and environmental quality program, property and casualty insurance program, product liability litigation, and worked with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Jim also worked with representatives in counterpart organizations in Europe and Canada.
Prior to his work at Unifrax, Mr. Cason worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as a manager for the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation from 1990 to 1993. Before that he served as acting assistant secretary and principal deputy assistant secretary of the Interior Department for Land and Minerals Management from 1985 to 1990. From 1982 to 1985, he served as special assistant to the director of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management. Jim, formerly from Portland, recently resides in Youngstown, N.Y. Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and graduated magna cum laude from Pacific University.[1]
