San Trovaso - old church

San Trovaso is a part of the municipality of Preganziol, in province of Treviso.

Geography

Located to the north-west of Preganziol and it develops maily along road Franchetti until intersection with another main road called Terraglio. It's near to Frescada (another part of the municipality of Preganziol) and so ISTAT counts the inhabitants of the two part together. Place Armando Diaz is the center of the village, where are located the two churches, the oratory, the elementary school and nursery school. It can be reach by train, because since 2008 in was opened a train line from Venice to Udine. San Trovaso for centuries was covered maily with wood, but the continuing deforestation it became agricultural land. The territory is crossed by scolo Bigonzo, a little river.

Origins of the name

Il toponym is the combination of the name of two saints: Gervasio and Protasio. In San Trovaso is dedicated a church, located in Venice.

History

San Trovaso has ancient origins and is cited in many documents since XII century. Initially San Trovaso was with the municipality of Treviso. The parish include also the nearest localities of Settecomuni (to the west) and Le Grazie (to the east). Settecomuni[1] in the past was scored between seven municipalities of Santo Angelo di Ghirada, San Trovaso, Preganziol, Sambughè, Zero, San Vitale and Canizzano. The locality Le Grazie has a marian shrine (Santa Maria delle Grazie) built in the XVII century and there is the tomb of Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi.

Villa Franchetti

The most famous monument is Villa Franchetti, built at the end of XVII century and is located long the main road called Terraglio. The owner was Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi, who created a vital cultural center: tone of her guests was Ugo Foscolo, where here he found inspiration to compose Dei sepolcri and also Antonio Canova and Ippolito Pindemonte.

Post station

Along road Terraglio, there is an old post station (in locality L'Albera), which is nowadays a restaurant.

The war memorial

War memorial - San Trovaso

The war memorial is one of the most important monuments in San Trovaso and it was built at the beginning of XX century: it was commissioned to a local artist Silvio Rossetto (1868-1925) in 1921 and was inaugurated in 1922 from the local fascist administration of Preganziol. The statue is made of white marble and rappresents a nude soldier (his nudity was a scandal at the time and it was not accepted by the local church and administration, even reaching its partial destruction by unknown persons) with the posture of a soldier from classical statues. It faces the Monte Grappa e with one hand is holdin a flag and in the other he has a knive, maybe to raprresents the courage of soldiers and the love for the homeland. The original base of the statue was substituted in the 90s, the original one was made of granite and rocks with into bombs (a donation from the Ministry of War). Nowadays the base is made of marble with the names of the fallen soldiers and civillians. There is also the name of the italian explorer Raimondo Franchetti (1889-1935), who lived in San Trovaso and owned Villa Franchetti.

Religious buildings

Old church

The old church is first mentioned in 1146, in a donation document made by bishop of Treviso, who gave it to the locals. It was modified in 1530 and in 1792 (maybe in this years they added the two marble angels on the altar and the organ). In 1996 it was restored.

The image Vergine del Rosario was made by Gian Battista Carrer in 1833 and the Martirio dei Santi went lost after the dropping of the ceiling in 1989. The image Santi Gervasio e Protasio, which is into the mail altar was made by Girolamo da Santacroce[2] , while the tabernacle was made by Marchiori.

The organ was made by Bazzani in 1843 and it was a donation by the counts Albrizzi.

New church

The new church is a modern building, consecrated in 1983.

The Sanctuary of Le Grazie

This sanctuary was made in 1613 and it was demolished in 1668. In 1775 it was built and Gian Battista Carrer made the interiors.

Economy

The main part of the economy is from agricultural work. There is also a small industry zone near the city center.
