Copperhead Island
"In 1989, before many of the south Charlotte suburbs were developed, Mecklenburg County voters approved a $1.6million bond to develop Copperhead Island. After protests by nearby residents in Steele Creek, the money was re-routed. Grand plans for an island resort died, replaced by six primitive campsites, the shelter for up to 100 picnickers and a mile-long, winding paved trail."
it is not snake infested
was run by a private company until ~2001 (the camping was run... the island's ownership by the county probably older)
