Autotonomy is the process whereby lizards, particularly skinks, shed their tails to avoid capture. The tail will regrow although cartilage will replace bone and the skin will have slightly different colouration. Autotonomy is possible because the tail musculature and vertebrae minismise blood loss from the break site and permit a clean bone break.
