From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carly Corinthos is a fictional character from the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital, currently portrayed by actress Laura Wright. Created by then-head writing team and introduced by then-executive producer Wendy Riche, the role of Carly was originated by Sarah Joy Brown, making her first appearance on April 5, 1996. Following Brown's departure in 2001, the role was recast was actress Tamara Braun, who remained with the soap until her own exit in 2005. Following a brief portrayal by Jennifer Bransford, Wright assumed the role on November 4, 2005. In 2014, as part of General Hospital's 51st anniversary celebration, Braun and Brown briefly reprised their portrayals of Carly, alongside Wright, during scenes with Carly's long-time counterpart, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard).

Introduced in 1996, as a "love to hate" character who constantly brings excitement to storylines because of her devious ways, is the illegitimate daughter of reformed bad girl Bobbie Spencer (Jackie Zeman), given up during Bobbie's time as a teenage prostitute. Since the character's 1996 introduction, Carly has become one of the show's most popular, prominent and vital characters, largely due to her romantic pairing with Sonny and her close friendship with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton, Billy Miller). Carly's destruction of Bobbie's marriage and her near lethal vendetta against A.J. Quartermaine (Sean Kanan, Billy Warlock), the biological father of her son Michael (Chad Duell), remain two of the most controversial, discussed and revered story arcs in the soap's history.

Hailed as "the hellcat viewers loved to hate as well as the underdog they couldn't help but love" by Soaps In Depth, by the time of Brown's departure, the once "duplicitous vixen" had developed into a "woman who would do positively anything to protect her child and the man she loves." Her "shady" agenda upon her introduction was claimed as reminiscent of Bobbie's days as a schemer in the late 1970s.
