Eric Carle is a children’s book author and illustrator, most famous for his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has been translated into 50 different languages and sold more than 20 million copies since its publication in 1969. He has illustrated over 60 children’s books.

Carle was born in 1929 Syracuse, New York, moved to Germany when he was six. He moved to New York City in 1952, and landed a job as a graphic designer at The New York Times. He later moved to Northampton, Massachusettes, where he still resides today. The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, a museum devoted to children’s books and founded by Carle and his wife Barbara, opened in 2002 in nearby Amherst.

Carle’s art is both innovative and one of a kind. He puts a special touch that only he can do, in each of his books. He uses a technique called collage. This along with hand-painted tissue papers, Carle cuts and layers them to create unbelievable images for young readers. His images come to life through his work. Through Carle’s books, children see learning as exciting and fun!

Throughout his journey as author and illustrator, Carle has won many prestigious awards from all over the world. These awards include First Prize for Picture Books from the International Children’s Book Fair, Bologna, Italy, and The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award. He has also been the recipient of awards from the Association of Booksellers for Children’s and The American Library Association.
