User:LiquidGhoul/Ground-dwelling frog taxonomy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reasoning behind changing the taxonomy of the Australian ground-dwelling frogs (Limnodynastidae, Myobatrachidae and Rheobatrachidae), was for the reason that the families seem not to be recognised as seperate families, but sub-families, within the Australian scientific community. My original reason for creating the seperate families, was because of the American Natural History Museum, which has a taxonomic database. This is what the other language wikis were using, and it is very convenient having everything in the one place. I had originally doubted them, because I had only ever heard of the Myobatrachidae family. I was also willing to believe it, as I thought it was recent research, but upon reading it again, it seems very old research. The two most recent Australian frog identification books by Tyler (University of Adelaide, one of the most reputable frog biologists in Aus) in 1995 and Cogger (Australian Museum, and working with frog taxonomy for over 50 years) in 2000 both do not recognise Limnodynastidae and Rheobatrachidae as families. Also, a recent tadpole identification book published in 2002 (Marion Anstis's Tadpoles of South Eastern Australia) did not recognise the other two families. I also saw a review of this book by Tyler, which said there were only minor errors. An error as big as missing families would be noted in the review.

Two very reputable, Australian sites also place all the ground-dwelling frogs within Myobatrachidae.

If you would like to discuss this, please do so here. Thankyou. --liquidGhoul 13:36, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
