Creating a page on Wikipedia

[edit]

I will be creating a Wikipedia page on the subject of the showroom cinema that is in Sheffield. I am doing this because the Showroom is close to my hometown of Rotherham and i have been to the showroom cinema on several occasions.

Reflective Analysis

[edit]

For my assignment I chose to do it on the Showroom cinema,Sheffield. Housed in a 1936 art deco building this cinema is an integral part of the Sheffield cultural industries quarter and has even been featured in the Arctic Monkeys song leave before the lights come on. The Showrooms Wikipedia page before I edited it was a stub article. This is a article that doesn't have enough information on it to be considered a full article on the subject but usually you find that this is more on the discretion of the editor creating the page because it encourages the other users to expand the page with what information they know.

I gathered most of my information from the showroom official website and some from the Lovebytes page because it gave me lots of festivals and events that have taken place within the showroom. This is what I contributed to the article as it was all really what the article was missing seeing as I searched for more research on the showroom cinema but what was already on the page was all I could find about it. Because of the expansion to the page I gave and not being able to find any other information other than what was on the Wikipedia page already I deemed that the article was not a stub page any more. Some people are under the assumption that a stub page is removed when the article is long like most of Wikipedia pages, However this is not always the case it can be removed if you believe that there is no other information on that article any more. This was the case for the article for the Futurist cinema that I looked at which was similar to the showroom cinema which didn't have much information but was not considered a stub article.

The one issue that I encountered from this was that there was so little information on the page. How I resolved editing this was to not look at adding everything but added what little information I had found about the events held at the showroom and tidying everything up on the page so it read better for the users and adding some headers to separate some of the information this in my opinion made the article better. So I learned from this that not every small on article on wikipedia means it doesn't have a lot information it may mean that for that particular subject there may not be much information. I also learned to trust Wikipedia a bit more seeing all the work that goes into making a good article and I will definitely refer to it in the future safe in the knowledge that people have worked hard on it even if I check how many people have edited the article to see if others approve of what is written in the article.

On my user page I haven't put much information as I'm not a fan of putting to many details on the internet about myself. But I have put on about what I am hoping to achieve with my movie making dreams. Hopefully people seeing that I have edited the showroom page will see on my page my love of all things film and know that I care to take pride in anything movie related I do. I have talked to a few people on wikipedia that I found helpful one was Andrea as he was doing the Lovebytes page he had events that Lovebytes had put on that were featured in the showroom cinema. Another person I tried to communicate with was a wikipedian called Kieth D I found that he had also recently edited on the showroom cinema article so once I had finished my changes I messaged him asking if there was anything he would change to the article. Now he didn't reply to me but when I next to my page I found the only thing he had changed was turning and and I had put in the title to a & so I trust from that he approved on what I had done. What I learned from this was the detail you have to look at to make the page seem professional such as the & instead of a and into a title. This lead me to change the events and festivals I had into a chronological order just to add a more professional look.
