Harmabe was the name of a silverback gorilla that once lived at the Cincinnati Zoo. In 2016, he was shot and killed after a seven-year-old child had ventured into the silverback gorilla enclosure. Although the child was not seriously injured, the threat to the child prompted staff to take lethal action. Immediately after the gorilla’s death, conservationists outraged at the killing of an endangered species and Harambe became a popular figure in social media. For many years following the incident, Harambe’s prevalence survived in joke form, until 2022. Days before Super Bowl LVI, Cincinnati Bengals’ player Sam Hubbard, stated in a podcast that the team was going to win for Harambe, in honor of him.[1] Hubbard’s words carried additional weight, as he was the defensive captain for the Bengals at the time. This knowledge may hint at the fact that Cincinnati players and fans united in the tragedy, and that it remains important to the atmosphere of the city itself. It remains to be seen how Harambe may effect the future Cincinnati Bengals’ culture.

[edit]In 2022, after the Cincinnati Bengals won their first playoff game in over three decades, the fanbase, along with the rest of the country, was shocked. Many fans contributed the team’s success to the current quarterback, Joe Burrow. The appreciation for Burrow found a medium in a multitude of nicknames. Some of the nicknames had similar meanings, such as Joe Brrr, Joe Cool, and Joe Chill. These names in specific reinforced the idea that Burrow stays cold under pressure and pushes the team forward. More unique names of burrow are as follows: Smokin’ Joe (which played on his love for cigars), The Tiger King (which morphed the popularity of the show, Tiger King and Burrow’s Bengals), and Joe Shiesty (which showcased his inconsiderate attitude toward other teams).[2]
