Irv Bauer is a screenwriter, playwright, critic, writing coach and teacher of screenwriting workshops internationally. Based in Manhattan, Bauer has taught at the graduate and undergraduate level at New York University, Sarah Lawrence College and The University of Washington. His popular workshop, Irv Bauer Screenwriting has been taught in New York, Los Angeles, Spoleto, Italy and London.
Early Life
[edit]Having attended the DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, Bauer enrolled in New York University, earning a Bachelor’s degree from NYU’s School of Commerce (which would later become Tisch School of the Arts). While there he studied with and was mentored by Haig P. Manoogian, the legendary teacher of Martin Scorsese, Chris Columbus, and others. Upon graduation, Bauer found work in Public Relations, with a brief stint at Grey Advertising. Soon afterwards, Bauer headed off for Paris, France and lived there for several where he pursued his passion for cinema and began to write film scripts. There he worked alongside directors, producers and other writers until one film, a collaboration with the composer M. Philippe-Gérard, brought him back to New York to secure financing for the project. He has continued to write plays, screenplays, film reviews and teach writing in New York since the mid-1970s.
