John H. White, Jr

[edit]

John H. White. Jr. is an American author, scholar, forensic psychologist, and former police sergeant for the Dallas Police Department.

Early life

[edit]

John H. White, Jr. was born and raised in the inner city of Dallas, Texas. He attended Maple Lawn Elementary School, Rusk Junior High School, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School after his parents moved away from the inner city. In high school, he was a member of the band and orchestra as a tuba and string bass player, respectively. He was also a writer for the school newspaper and a volunteer for the Key Club. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, then transferred to North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He continued school at North Texas State and earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in Counseling.

Career

[edit]

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, White taught psychology at David Carpenter High School in Dallas. He then joined the Dallas Police Department. After completing the police academy, White was assigned to the Central Division and patrolled near the inner city in which he was raised. He transferred to the Psychological Services Unit, was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the Communications Division. He then went to the Internal Affairs Division and later transferred to the Fugitive and Special Investigations Division in Northwest Patrol. While working as a police officer, White was involved in two shootings and four high speed car chases.

White was lured away from the police department by corporate industry and joined the Training and Education Division of Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in Plano, Texas. After only a year, he left EDS and Dallas and began teaching psychology and criminal justice courses at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, New York. After three years, he took a position as an assistant professor of criminal justice at Stockton State College (now Stockton University) in Galloway, New Jersey. He later transferred to the psychology program and was promoted to full professor in 2015.

Stockton University

[edit]

While at Stockton University, White was the coordinator of the criminal justice program and modified a previously submitted criminal justice proposal for a master’s degree. The master’s degree program was implemented in 2000. White also proposed and implemented a forensic psychology track for the undergraduate criminal justice and psychology programs and the graduate criminal justice program.

As part of his research endeavors, White has created a database of over 500 serial killers, which he has used for numerous presentations and to write numerous scholarly articles. The database also served as information for his novel.

Practice of Forensic Psychology

[edit]

White received his license to practice psychology in New Jersey in 2001 and he began treating court-ordered clients who had committed criminal offenses, mostly sex crimes. He was recruited as an associate member of the Academy Group, a forensic behavioral science company, and continued to work a variety of cases as a consultant ranging from homicide to Internet luring cases. He joined the Vidocq Society as an associate member. Vidocq Society is an organization comprised of former and current detectives, forensic scientists, forensic psychologists, and criminal profilers. The Society meets once a month in Philadelphia and offers suggestions to various law enforcement agencies after they present a cold case to the group. White was a board member of the American College of Forensic Psychology, which meets once a year on the west coast.

After testifying in several court cases, White realized how important it is to be knowledgeable about neuropsychology concepts. He went back to school in 2012 and earned his certificate in clinical neuropsychology training from Fielding Graduate University in New York City in 2014.

Media

[edit]

White was asked to travel to Los Angeles and present material regarding serial murder and sex crimes to the staff and writers of the television series Criminal Minds. He continued to offer information to the Technical Advisors of the show. He became the Technical Advisor to the A&E documentary series Killer Profile, which has aired seven episodes. White does not consider himself a songwriter, but he did write a song that was sung by the second runner-up of the Miss New York beauty pageant in 1991. The title of the song was Mark, a song about a fallen Dallas police Officer. White has also written several unpublished efforts including a musical entitled, Blue on Wednesdays, a play entitled, The Experiment, and several screen plays.

Books

[edit]

Novel – In Pursuit of a Serial Killer: The Archetype Case In Pursuit of a Serial Killer: The Archetype Case is a fictional story about the lives of several law enforcement officers as they pursue a serial killer who travels from Detroit to Dallas. Readers follow the officers as they tediously go through the investigative and profiling processes in their pursuit of a monster home invader who kills families. Working the family killings conjures up all kinds of emotions that most law enforcement officers, especially Jeffrey Holland, try to keep buried. Throughout the case, Holland is haunted by images of the past including the death of his parents and his failure to maintain close relationships with others. FBI Special Agent Kris Loewen just wanted an easy desk job as an agent, and was terrified by being thrust into such a horrific case. Loewen has to work through her insecurities as an FBI agent as well as deal with an abusive marriage as she and Holland, along with other task force members, try to bring a resolution to The Archetype Case. This novel is loosely based on a few police experiences encountered by White, cases he has worked as a forensic psychologist, and by the many true stories of real serial killers who have committed horrendous offenses. It is the first of a series of novels planned by White using the same characters.
