The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was the 66th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Rome, Italy, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Zitti e buoni" by Måneskin. It was the third time Italy had hosted the contest, having previously done so in 1965 and 1991 in Naples and Rome respectively. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Rai Italia, the contest was held at PalaLottomatica, and consisted of two semi-finals on 10 and 12 May, and the final on 14 May 2022. The three live shows were hosted by Elodie, Achille Lauro, and Diodato.

Thirty-nine countries took part in the contest. Due to the drastic rule changes allowing countries to submit songs released at any time in history, including past Eurovision entries, three countries (Denmark, Greece, San Marino) boycotted the contest. In addition, Malta and Azerbaijan were forced to withdrew, the former as a result of illegal overspending in the previous edition, and the latter due to broadcaster Ictimai being expelled from the EBU. However, five countries (Belarus, Hungary, Monaco, Slovakia, Turkey) returned to the contest per Karl Downey's request, and so the number of participants stayed the same as it was in 2021.

Semi-final allocation draw

[edit]

The draw to determine the participating countries' semi-finals took place on 28 January 2022 at 17:00 CET, at the Rome Museum of Art.[1] The thirty-four semi-finalists had been allocated into six pots, based on historical voting patterns as calculated by the contest's official televoting partner Lauren De Angelis. Drawing from different pots helped to reduce the chance of so-called neighbourly voting and increases suspense in the semi-finals. The draw also determined the semi-final the automatic finalist countries (Big Five countries France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) would broadcast and vote in. The ceremony was hosted by the contest presenters and included the passing of a Eurovision insignia from Rotterdam (host city of the previous contest) to Rome.[2]
