John Austen (1886-1948) was a 20th century book illustrator & designer. His early work, including a fine Hamlet, was Beardsleyesque in style, but his later work, including Daphnis & Chloe, was influenced by Art Deco. He used a variety of techniques, including woodengraving & scraperboard, to suit the text he was illustrating. He also did commercial work, including posters. Austen was a friend of Harry Clarke & Alan Odle, and exhibited with them at the St George's Gallery in 1925.
