Visual representation of the Sei He Ki, originating in Japan and linking to Reiki energy therapy.

The Sei-He-Ki (or "Sei-Hei-Ki") is a symbol from Japanese language that represents "mental or emotional healing".[1] It is used in the ancient healing practice of Reiki as part of the therapeutic process.[2] The Sei-He-Ki is the second of three healing symbols used by trained Reiki practitioners during Reiki's energy healing ritual.[2] Reiki practitioners claim that when the symbol is visualized by the healer, the Sei-He-Ki will direct universal healing energy, or qi ("chi"), to the patient's chakras and to their aura's emotional layers.[3]

Other methods that are claimed to activate the symbol in a healing session include drawing it with the palm of the hand, or speaking the symbol's name out loud.[1] Trained Reiki practitioners claim that the Sei-He-Ki is used to heal emotional wounds, clear emotional energy blockages, and rid the emotional system of negative energies.[2] The effects of the Sei-He-Ki symbol, used within the system of Reiki energy therapy, have no empirical evidence and are considered to be pseudoscience.[4]

Origins

[edit]

The Sei-He-Ki symbol is based on Kanji, a Japanese system of writing.[5] However, the symbol's origin is said to be from Sanskrit, an ancient language of the sacred Vedas.[5] The Sei-He-Ki was popularized by Mikao Usui when he founded the system of Reiki therapy during the early 20th Century. It is said that the symbol was brought to his attention by a higher source of energy, appearing to him as a beam of bright white light entering his third eye.[5] This occurrence happened on the final day of his twenty-one day meditation.[5] Researchers suspect that the origin of the Sei-He-Ki is much older than Usui's experience of it, since the Reiki symbols have been found in monasteries and in Buddha Sutras which originate before Usui's time.[5]

Cognitive Associations

[edit]

Reiki practitioners claim that using the Sei-He-Ki symbol in a healing session will restore balance to the psyche on both the mental and emotional levels.[6] It is claimed that the healing energy associated with the Sei-He-Ki symbol works by aligning the two cerebral hemispheres.[3] The right hemisphere of the brain regulates the emotions, while the left hemisphere regulates rationality, logic, and deductive reasoning.[3] Reiki practitioners maintain that wellbeing is based on the balance of emotional and logical forces, so the Sei-He-Ki's mission is to ensure that the forces of the cognitive mind are even.[3] There is no empirical evidence that Reiki healing therapy is able to effect cognitive functions.[4]

Additional Uses

[edit]

Healing Emotional Trauma

[edit]

In her book, "Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art", Diane Stein discusses the Sei-He-Ki as being used to heal suppressed emotional trauma in the subconscious mind. Stein, a Reiki Master, claims that the act of suppressing painful emotions can manifest physical illnesses in the body.[7] She maintains that the Sei-He-Ki symbol can be used during the healing ritual to bring the suppressed trauma to consciousness.[7] Stein maintains that the symbol allows the patient to reconnect with the pain and ultimately let it go.[7] She believes that when the painful emotion is released, the coordinated physical illness will heal.[7] This method, according to Stein, works on both animals and humans.[7]

Protection

[edit]

An additional name for the Sei-He-Ki is the "protection symbol".[1] Practitioners believe that drawing the Sei-He-Ki around the human body can protect it from negative energy and allow only positive energy to remain near.[1] Stein claims in her literature that the Sei-He-Ki can be used to guard a room from negative emotions and dis-ease if the symbol is placed in each corner.[7] Such effects are considered to be pseudoscience; there is no empirical evidence to support these claims.[4]

Purification

[edit]

Healers claim to use the Sei-He-Ki during purification ceremonies as a means of creating a protective shield and removing negative vibrations from the aura.[1] Stein believes that the Sei-He-Ki can be used to release unwanted or harmful spirit attachments from the body, a paranormal concept founded on the basis of metaphysics.[7]
