"Want To" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa from Dua Lipa: Complete Edition (2018), a reissue of her eponymous debut studio album. The song was written by the singer alongside Amish Dilipkumar Patel and Andrew Jackson, with the production being handled by Patel and Stephen "Koz" Kozmeniuk. It was released for digital download and streaming on 6 September 2018 as the first promotional single from the reissue.

Background and release

[edit]

Dua Lipa wrote "Want To" with Amish Dilipkumar Patel and Andrew Jackson. Patel also handled the production as ADP with Stephen "Koz" Kozmeniuk. The latter musician produced several other track on Lipa's eponymous debut studio album. Patel engineered and programmed the song while Kozmeniuk handled drum programming. The song was recorded at Modulator Music in Toronto, as well as ADP Music and FRQNCY Studios in London. The mixing was handled by Jamie Snell at the Hamilton in Cheam, UK while Chris Gehringer mastered the song at New York City's Sterling Sound.[1] Prior to its release, Lipa began performing "Want To" during live promotion for her album and it became a fan-favourite track. The song did not make the album's final track listing as Lipa was constantly writing new songs and never got around to finishing it. However, following the album's release, Lipa revealed that she would release a live version of the song as she thought that was its best version. The song was later leaked.[2][3]

On 4 September 2018, Lipa announced that she would be reissuing her debut album as Dua Lipa: Complete Edition with the studio version of "Want To" on its track list.[4] The song was released through Warner Bros. Records for digital download and streaming two days later as the first promotional single from the reissue.[5] "Want To" also promoted Lipa's I-Pace campaign with British car manufacturer Jaguar where users of the car could create remixes of the song based and how they drove as well as personalized remixes based on their Spotify streaming history. The remixes mixed up moods, tempos, arrangement and different musical styles, including dance, drum and bass, hip hop, orchestral and pop. The campaign was announced at a secret gig in Amsterdam where Lipa as well as celebrities such as Dutch model Doutzen Kroes and French actress Alix Bénézech created their own remixes by driving the car. Shortly thereafter, "Want To" became the most remixed song in history.[6][7] It appears as the opening track of the reissue's second disc that was released on 19 October 2018.[8]

Composition and reception

[edit]

"Want To" became Lipa's eleventh entry on the Irish Singles Chart; it peaked at number 52 and spent eight weeks on the chart.[9] On Australia's ARIA Singles Chart, the song debuted at its peak position of number 83.[10] Elsewhere, the song reched number 20 on the NZ Hot Singles Chart and number 6 on the Sweden Heatseeker Chart.[11][12]
