Unattributed cut, paste and translation of articles from other language Wikipedias
[edit]Some time back I had to draw your attention to the requirement to acknowledge others work if you translate a page from another language wikipedia by placing a translated page template on the English language page you had created. This was on French submarine Redoutable (Q136) French submarine Ajax (Q148) and German torpedo boat Albatros, the first two being copied from French wikipedia and the last one from German wikipedia. I now see you have recently created a number of further articles on French submarines and submitting some of them for B class review. However on checking Requin-class submarine I have discovered that the prose is copied from the Polish wikipedia entry again without attribution. A cursory check has revealed similarities between other original articles on Polish wikipedia and pages you have created on English wikipedia. I have added the requisite edit summary on the article and template on the talk page for the Requin class submarine, will you kindly do likewise on the other articles you have copied and remember to do so at the outset on any other articles you copy across in the future Lyndaship (talk) 14:31, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Review for English/French speaker / Urgently need your help!
[edit]Hello L293D. I am contacting you because you are a speaker of both English and French. I have created the page Draft:Pierre_Jovanovic nearly 2 months ago, and I am waiting for a review. Could you please consider having a look at it ? Please excuse me if my request is improper. I am learning the ropes. Best regards. Micha Jo (talk) 08:42, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
@L293D: Please, I need your help. My first article, which you kindly approved after a 2 month review process was submitted for deletion by user Bradv. See here Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pierre Jovanovic. I presented strong arguments in the talk page Talk:Pierre_Jovanovic, but they were not considered. Could you please have a look, and support my page if you like it ? Also note that Bradv is the infamous editor which deleted the Wikipedia page of Mrs Strickland who later won the Nobel prize in physics: [[1]] and [[2]]. Thank you and kind regards. WikiProject Military History Contest rules
[edit]Hello L293D, you may not be aware that the rules of the contest provide that This is self-scoring (but not self-assessing) so requests for assessments should be made through the normal channels (i.e. at WP:MHA). The entries that I removed are those that you self-assessed and did not submit for independent assessment. You are free to self-assess up to B-class, but for those to be counted for the contest they need to be independently verified by listing at WP:MHA, which you appear to be aware of as you list articles there. Thanks, Kges1901 (talk) 09:31, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Kges1901: The contest rules (Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Contest#How it works), point number four, states: 4.As articles are improved throughout the month, contestants should list their articles at WP:MHA for independent re-assessment, although it is acceptable to self-assess up to C-class.. How/Where does a rule say that I'm not allowed to list articles that haven't been assessed by another editor, even if lower than B? L293D (☎ • ✎) 11:06, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Copyright image
[edit]I think it would be best to reinstate the image of the two scientists. As indicated by WP:Copyright, 'original images and sound files licensed under CC BY-SA and GFDL (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts) or in the public domain are greatly preferred to copyrighted media files used under fair use or otherwise.' - Yes, but in the case of a 2005 book, the most relevant image is by far the cover. The image satisfies all criteria at WP:NFCC. L293D (☎ • ✎) 02:42, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – November 2018
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2018).
- A request for comment determined that non-administrators will not be able to request interface admin access.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether the Mediation Committee should be closed and marked as historical.
- A village pump discussion has been ongoing about whether the proposed deletion policy (PROD) should be clarified or amended.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether pending changes protection should be applied automatically to today's featured article (TFA) in order to mitigate a recent trend of severe image vandalism.
- Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.

- The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.
- Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.

French submarine classes
[edit]{{Armide class submarine}} says it was preceded by Diane class. I'm guessing that was Diane-class submarine (1916), but that claims to be succeeded by Dupuy de Lôme rather than Armide. The other alternative is Diane-class submarine (1930), but that claims to be succeeded by Orion which in turn was succeeded by Diane again. The Armide article claims that Armide was preceded by Gustave Zédé! I'm confused; please can you help fix the links? Thanks, Certes (talk) 11:52, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Certes: yes, there is a lot of confusion around submarine class succession. Nowadays, classes are explicitly retired and new ones are commissioned and its easy to tell. But especially for 1900-1950 French submarines, there is a lot of confusion because some classes were ordered before but commissioned after another class. And the pressing into service of German submarines doesn't help in the confusion either. However, I have access to Submarines: An Illustrated History of Their Impact, by Paul E. Fontenoy, and I'll be doing a restructuring according to the order in the book. L293D (☎ • ✎) 12:16, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Incomplete DYK nomination
[edit]Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/German torpedo boat T24 at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; if you would like to continue, please link the nomination to the nominations page as described in step 3 of the nomination procedure. - Thanks for the encouragements, but I don't think I would pass given I've been here for only a year. And there are much more fun things to do here than adminning, like writing French submarine articles, participating in article writing contests (I'm in the lead!) and other stuff. Head's up
[edit]A couple of head's up about OTD and a DYK nomination: [3] and [4]. Carcharoth (talk) 15:59, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
We've had this talk before
[edit]Dude, WTF? You copied my work from another boat of this class to start this one, without attribution, I might add, and now you want to start a GAN without letting me know? Or even have the courtesy of adding me as a co-nominator? And who do you think's going to have to do the bulk of the work to respond to the reviewer's comments since you don't have most of the sources that I've used to write the vast majority of the article?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:01, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- 1. There is no special right to nominate an article for GA bestowed upon the article's expander.
- 2. I have written parts of the article and made a DYK on it, so I am thoroughly familiar with its contents.
- 3. I do have access to some of the article's sources, for example The German Fleet at War, 1939-1945.
- 4. I do have some experience with torpedo boats and GAs, as I passed Albatross a month ago.
- 5. I did not and will not add you myself as co-nominator of any article. How in the world do you expect me to somehow magically know that you will want to spend time on this specific article?
- 6. I did not consult you beforehand because of the surprisingly harsh and cold reply I got when I asked you last time. However, if that's for the same kind on content to get on my talk page, I will post on yours next time.
- 7. There nothing disgraceful, much less insulting, in having one's article nominated for GA. I would be very flattered if you nom'd one of my articles.
- If there is a particular prestige in nominating an article for GA that I was unaware of, I am willing to removed the GAN template and let you place it yourself. L293D (☎ • ✎) 02:52, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, You are right that one should left red linked to encourage editors to create her biography. But actually editors with interest in Pakistani entertainment and biographies are very few otherwise her biography would created right now because she played a leading role from 2013 for example: Mann Ke Moti aired in 2013-2014, I dont know much about how article is created. will you please make her biography considering this https://www.google.com.pk/search?q=yasra+rizvi&client=ms-android-oppo&prmd=inv&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiwq63jqMzeAhVDyhoKHQFUB4AQ_AUICigC and i will too add her notable works after that — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.160.117.122 (talk) 12:19, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
- I disagree that editors with interest in Pakistani entertainment are very few. There are hundreds if not thousands of notable Pakistani actors and actresses and it is just normal for it to take several years before an article is written on them. And to get back to this redlink thing, if there really are "few" editors with an interest in Pakistani entertainment, then it is still better to leave it a redlink to encourage them to create an article. Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. |
Hello L293D/Archives,
- Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
- Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
- If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
- We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
- With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

Pom-pon
[edit]Pom-pon is a word, and is the original name of the fluffy balls so named, and the naval apparatus named after them. Apparently, over the years, so many people have used the term pom-pom (incorrectly), it has now become "correct". This is similar to the drift of "media", for example, from plural to singular.
