The year 2013 is the 20th year in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts promotion based in the United States. 2013 will start with UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping. 2013 will also see the introduction of the women's bantamweight weight class with UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche.[1]

UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping
[edit]UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on January 19, 2013 at Ibirapuera Arena in São Paulo, Brazil.[2][65]
Background
[edit]The main fight will have the middleweights Michael Bisping and Vitor Belfort. The event will also hold the first UFC fight for Daniel Sarafian, middleweight finalist on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. Sarafian was injured before the championship fight with Cezar Ferreira, who went on to win the show.[66]
Johnny Eduardo was briefly linked to a bout at this event against Yuri Alcantara, but was replaced by George Roop.[67] Roop was then injured and replaced by UFC newcomer Pedro Nobre.[68]
Thiago Perpetuo was expected to face Michael Kuiper at the event. However, Perpetuo suffered an injury and was replaced by Caio Magalhaes.[69] On December 27, it was announced that Magalhaes had also pulled out of the bout and that Kuiper would be shifted to UFC on Fox 6 on January 26, 2013 to face Buddy Roberts.[70]
Roger Hollett was expected to face Wagner Prado at the event. However, Hollett was forced out of the bout with a torn bicep and was replaced by promotional newcomer Ildemar Alcantara.[71]
UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar
[edit]UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on February 2, 2013 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.[72][73][74] It is the first pay-per-view event of the year.
Background
[edit]A bout between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida was briefly linked to this event,[75] but was eventually moved to UFC 157 to bolster that event's card.[76]
Erick Silva was expected to face Jay Hieron at the event. However, Silva pulled out of the bout citing an injury, and was replaced by promotional newcomer Tyron Woodley.[77]
UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs. McDonald
[edit]UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs. McDonald is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on February 16, 2013 at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom.
Background
[edit]Dennis Siver was expected to face Cub Swanson at the event. However, Siver was forced out of the bout, and was replaced by Dustin Poirier.[78]

UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche
[edit]UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on February 23, 2013 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.[79]
Background
[edit]The headline bout between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche will be the first-ever women's fight in UFC history.[80][81] The two will be fighting in the newly created 135-pound bantamweight division.[80] Liz Carmouche is the first openly gay fighter to be signed to the UFC,[82] and landed the headlining fight opposite Rousey after a successful social media campaign to persuade UFC promoter Dana White.[83]

[edit]UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez (or UFC on Fox 7) is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held on April 20, 2013 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.[84] The event will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports.
Background
[edit]The event is expected to be headlined by a Lightweight Championship bout between the current champion Benson Henderson and the final Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, and promotional newcomer Gilbert Melendez.[85] Also featured on the card will be a bout between two time Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir and the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier.[86]
