Trivia
[edit]This article contains a list of miscellaneous information. (June 2007) |
- Although the programme is set in Antarctica, Pingu and his family live in an igloo, which are found only in the Arctic as the traditional dwellings of the native Inuit people.
- In 1989, David Hasselhoff released (in Switzerland only) the single "Pingu Dance"[1], a rap song based on the Pingu shorts and featuring samples of Pinguish. A portion of this song is used as the theme to Pingu on the PBS Kids Sprout channel in the United States.
- In 2006, Pingu was featured in a music video for Eskimo Disco's first single, 7-11[2].
- The episode "Pingu WC episode"/"Pingu's Lavatory Story" was banned in some countries because of its graphic depictions of urination. The episode "Pingu's Dream" was also similarly subject to bans because it contains a giant leopard seal trying to capture Pingu.
- In a Swedish talk show, interviewee Madonna criticised Pingu as a bad influence on talk show host Kristian Luuk's daughter, because she considers TV dangerous to children's health.
- In the episode Pingu is jealous (Episode 6, Series 1), a flag atop Pingu's house nearly resembles the flag of Dominican Republic except for the penguin in the center of the flag.
- In the episode Pingu's admirer, a signpost gives directions to Perestroika and Glasnost.
- Some episodes of Pingu were released as bonus features on Fraggle Rock DVDs.
- Some episodes feature primitive electronic devices, such as a 1980s-era record player in "Pingu helps with Incubating", or a simplistic radio as seen in "Pingu's parents go to a concert".
- In "Pingu and Pinga don't want to go to bed" (Episode 12, Series 1), Pinga's chamberpot is clearly visible.
- On the episode Pingu helps with Incubating (Episode 2, Series 1) Pingu is listening to Woodpeckers From Space by the band VideoKids in the early version of this episode and in the current version, the song is replaced with an extended version of the current Pingu intro theme.
- One Japanese DVD, fun! fun! story, its "fun! fun!" aspect led to flash animated "fun! fun! comics"
Pingu is Introduced
[edit]- Alternative title - "Hello Pingu"
Pingu and his parents are having lunch, but Pingu is eating disgustingly; smashing his fork, swallowing potatoes(possibly eggs) whole, blowing bubbles in his drink, and of course refusing to eat his greens. After this comical lunch, Pingu goes out to play with his ball, but his two "friends" Pingo and Pingg come and steal it (this is contrary to later episodes, in which they are nice to him). After a brawl in which Pingu knocks his head and his ball is burst, he gets his ball back and goes inside. His parents put a patch on his head and ball, and rock him to sleep in a hammock.
- Produced in 1988
- The first Pingu episode. Introduces Pingu, his parents, two friends named Pingo and Pingg, and the overall gist and premise of the series.

Thomas Project note draft
[edit]A new DVD "The Christmas Engines",[1] containing the five episodes The Perfect Gift, Duncan the Humbug, Last Train for Christmas, Duck in the Water and Long Lost Friend,[2] is scheduled to be released in the US on 28 October 2014.
Episode Count / Identification
[edit]In my browsing of the Thomas episodes I've noticed
- (a) the info box episode count is given as 323, but I can only find 321 (Series / Seasons 1 through 12 come to 308, including the 6 from "Engines and Escapades", + the 13 from "Jack and the Pack / On site with Thomas / Thomas' Trusty Friends"). Note: this is sort of consistent with the HIT poster not long ago which refers to 288 episodes, + 20 more on the way (series 12) = 308
- (b) the episodes are numbered throughout the series / seasons by the episode number (e.g. 143, 245 etc), and not the number within each series / season (e.g 1, 2, ..., 26). The main exception to this is series 1 (obviously) and series 11, which has been referenced 1 - 26 (including the "escapade" episodes) rather than 263 to 288 (series twelve reverts to "normal" with numbers 289 - 308)
- (c) The episode numbers given to the 13 "Jack and the Pack" episodes are 235 - 247, which is the same as given to the first 13 (different) episodes in the series 10 list.
- (d) Would it be better to include all the "Escapade" and "Jack" episodes "fully" in the main list rather than separately, with an appropriate annotation that they were / are DVD only as appropriate (particularly as the "Escapade" episodes have now been broadcast in the US)

DVD Releases
[edit]UK Primary DVD Releases
[edit]The following table lists the primary DVD releases for the UK (a DVD is considered to be "primary" if it contains at least one track which is "new to DVD" when the DVD is released). When applicable, the list includes DVDs that are known to be due for release soon. All UK DVD releases are in 16:9 widescreen format.
Note: In the "list of episodes" for a DVD, the DVD# (DVD number) identifies the track number for the episode on the DVD, and is in a form that is consistent with the "DVD reference" in the episode lists (e.g. the episode "Holly's Magic Wand" has a DVD# of 1.01, which is track 1 of primary DVD Volume 1). The Episode# (episode number) identifies the series, and the episode number within the series, for the episode (e.g. "Holly's Magic Wand" has an Episode# of 1.03, which identifies it as episode 3 in series 1).

Notes on changes
[edit]The main reason for making the changes is to remove the "volume" approach to the episode ordering for series 1, as I haven't found any other B&H listings that take this approach. The current Wiki listing is thus rather an anomaly, especially as to date I haven't seen a similar approach anywhere else!
Considerations include
- (1) Series / seasons are more normally listed in "original airdate" order, but I've had to use the order commonly given across a number of sites, particularly TV scheduling listings etc. (eg. Radio Times, TVDB, Nick Jr Wiki, IMDB, Locate, Channel 5...)) as I haven't found much believable information on B&H episode original airdates. What I have found that looks vaguely plausible is that the first series one episode was broadcast on 6 April 2009, and the first 13 episodes for series 2 seem to have been first broadcast on weekdays (not Sat / Sun) starting 2 July 2012, through to 18 July 2012. I've asked Nick Jr if they can provide the full info., but I haven't (yet?!) had any response. If anyone can provide further (verifiable) information, please let me know.
- (2) For series 1 I've used the order that seems to be currently in use across all the lists (other than Wiki) that I've examined, and ignoring that Channel 5 series 1 has the "Woodpecker" episode as no. 49 (all the other lists have the episode as no. 42!), so that episodes 42 - 48 on the C5 list are episodes 43 - 49 on the other lists. For series 2, again all the lists where given are in line, including the current Wiki list, except that the C5 list is incomplete (episodes 32 - 39 and 45 - 52 are not listed) and, although the Ovguide list is complete, it has episodes 39 & 40 switched (i.e. 39 on the Ovguide list is 40 on the other lists, and 40 on Ovguide is 39 on the others), similarly for episodes 48 & 49. I've kept with the current Wiki order for series 2.
- (3) The episode titles are consistent with those shown on the title page of the episodes as broadcast, and aren't changed from the ones given on the lists before these changes were made. There is one possible exception as I haven't yet seen the title page for series 2 episode 49 "Chickens Ride West" (Nick Jr keep showing it in the broadcast guides, but whenever I've checked what was actually broadcast the episode "Gaston's Birthday" has been shown!!).
- (4) I've changed the style of the lists, in particular to provide an overall summary of episodes at the beginning. The content and overall look of the lists is quite similar to the old versions, although series 1 appears to have rather more changes than series 2 because of the re-organisation of the episode order. A few minor changes have been made to the episode descriptions. I've also shown a table of the DVD's issued to date, with listings of the contents.
