The term iPad kid is used to generally describe a child who spends an excessive amount of time in front of screens. The term is derived from Apple's iPad tablet computers. The term is typically directed towards members of Generation Alpha.

Description

[edit]

The term was coined by users on TikTok in the early 2020s.[1]

Generation Alpha, or those born roughly from 2010 to 2025 in the west, is the first generation to grow up wholly immersed in the information age. A 2017 study from Common Sense Media found that roughly 80% of children had access to a tablet of some sort. Ryan Lowe, child and adolescent psychotherapist and spokesperson for the Association of Child Psychotherapists, stated that parents often times use as a surrogate parent when needing to calm their child.[2]
