John Thomaides (born September 15, 1966) is the current mayor of San Marcos, Texas and was elected on December 13, 2016.[1] Thomaides served on the city council from 2003-2010. In 2010 Thomaides ran against Daniel Guerrero who was elected Mayor of San Marcos in 2010, by a margin of 42 votes [2] Thomaides served from 2011-2016 on the city council when he ran for mayor in 2016 against local business owner, Ruben Becerra. [3] [4]In the 2016 December runoff, Thomaides beat Becerra by a margin of 42 votes- the same number he lost by in 2010. [5] During his first year in office, Thomaides marked the 6th Texas mayor to join the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda. [6]
In 2013 and 2014, the United States Census Bureau named it the fastest-growing city in the United States.[7][8] In December 2013, it was named #9 on Business Insider's list of the "10 Most Exciting Small Cities In America".[9]
