Georgetown University Graduate Student Government

Georgetown’s graduate students, which make up more than half of the university’s student body[1], are governed by a student-run organization, the Georgetown University Graduate Student Government, or GradGov.[2] GradGov acts as advisory board and source of funding for other graduate student groups.[3] GradGov hosts events for graduate student body that focus on networking, academic and social interests.[2]

Elected and appointed members of GradGov include the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Director of Communications, Director of Programming, Director of Groups, Chief of Staff, Deputy Treasurer, Deputy Director of Advocacy, Deputy Director of Communications, Deputy Director of Programming, and Deputy Chief of Staff.[4] Another branch of GradGov is the General Assembly, or GA, is a group of students who come together to oversee the function of GradGov as a representative student-run governing body.[5]

Popular events hosted by GradGov include the Graduate Student Welcome BBQ, Annual Boat Cruise, Graduate Student Basketball Tailgate at Hill Country Barbecue Market, and Coffee Hours, which are hosted once a month as an opportunity to connect with fellow graduate students.[6] One responsibility of GradGov is to facilitate the Graduate Student Awards Program. This is a student-nominated awards recognizing academic excellence, leadership, teaching ability, global citizenship, and mentorship.[7]

Athletics

Yates

In addition to the recreational organizations and facilities located throughout Georgetown and the larger D.C. area, students also use the Yates Memorial Field House, the university’s recreational facility, which opened in 1979.[8] At Yates, students can play intramural or club sports, workout, sign up for personal training and health coaching as well as participate in a fitness program, like Aquatic Aerobics, Zumba, Yoga or Spinning. Yates is open to students and registered members.[9]

Georgetown Sports

There are 11 men’s and 11 women’s varsity sports teams. They belong to NCAA Division I and sports include: Basketball, Football, Swimming and Diving, Soccer, Lacrosse, Track and Field, Rowing, Baseball, Golf, Sailing, Field Hockey, Softball, Volleyball. [10] In addition, there are 23 club sports teams.[11] Georgetown’s sports teams go by the name of Hoyas, which originated from “Hoya Saxa,” the university’s official cheer. While Georgetown athletes are the “Hoyas,” their mascot is Jack the Bulldog, a tradition that began when various dogs came to different games in the 1920s[10].A calendar of games is available.

STUDENT GROUPS

There are approximately 39 student groups on campus[12]. Groups are student run and typically pertain to a social or cultural topic.[13] Groups include Georgetown Refugee Action, Graduate Nursing Student Academy, Latin American Policy Association and more.[12] Memberships range from 14 to over 200 students, depending on the group.[13]

MUSIC/ART

Georgetown students are able to access the Healey Family Student Center, which offers music practice rooms[14].

Music Ensembles

There are academic and student-run vocal and instrumental groups. Prospective members must audition. Auditions are open to students and other members of Georgetown community.[15]

Performing Arts

Students can participate in University sponsored performances by performing, directing, choreographing, building sets, writing scripts, volunteering to usher, or working backstage[16].

Art

For students looking to engage with or view student art, the main campus gallery is the Lucille M. and Richard F.X. Spangulo Art Gallery located in the Walsh building, Room 101.[17] The University Art Collection consists of gifts from alumni and their friends, including paintings, antiques, and sculptures. The university has access to over 12,000 fine prints, which are located in the Lauinger Library.[18]

GUTS BUS ACCESS

Georgetown University offers a free handicapped accessible shuttle, the Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS), for its faculty, students and staff who need to travel to the main campus, Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and Georgetown University Law Center. The buses operate on five separate routes, which bridge the campus with metro stations, Dupont Circle, Georgetown University Law Center, Capitol Hill and parts of Arlington, Virginia. The routes are: Dupont Circle, Rosslyn, Wisconsin Avenue, the Law Center and Arlington.[19]

USE OF CAMPUS SPACES

RELIGION

The Campus Ministry facilitates Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Orthodox Christian, Protestant worship services during the week[20]. There are a variety of religious spaces used for worship: Dahlgren Chapel, St. William Chapel, Copley Crypt Chapel, Muslim Prayer Room (Main and Medical School campuses), Makon, and John Main Meditation Center.[20]

RENTING SPACES

Georgetown Event Management Services oversees the Office of Campus Activity Facilities (OCAF), which collaborates with student groups to rent spaces for any type of student organization-run event.[21]
