Climate Protection Agency Mannheim (German: Klimaschutzagentur Mannheim gGmbH) is a nonprofit limited company that offers advice to Mannheim residents on energy saving measures, funding and the use of renewable energies.[1][2] It was founded in 2009 as part of the city’s climate protection conception, a catalogue of sixty measures to reduce the city’s carbon dioxide emissions by at least 40% by 2020.

History

[edit]

The creation of the Climate Protection Agency Mannheim is a part of Mannheim's strategy to prevent global warming by reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. In April 2010 Mannheim became a signatory to the Covenant of Mayors, demonstrating its commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 20% from 1990 to 2020. To achieve this, the city is following a strategy outlined in the climate protection conception which was created in cooperation with the IFEU institute in Heidelberg and passed by the city council in 2009. [3] The creation of the Climate Protection Agency is assigned in the measure Ü1 of the conception. [4] According to the conception, its responsibilities are to carry out the measures of the climate protection conception in the areas private households, churches and clubs, small and medium sized enterprises etc. More details on the exact activities are given in the next section. The Climate Protection Agency is funded by the City of Mannheim (51%), the energy utility MVV Energie AG (40%) and the building society GBG Mannheim mbH (9%).[5] There are five full time staff, including three qualified energy advisers.

Fields of activity

[edit]
  • Providing a free initial advisory service for residents about energy saving measures, funding opportunities (such as government subsidies) and renewable energy use.
  • Initiating and participating in other climate protection projects, for example assisting in the funding and planning.
  • Carrying out the city’s climate protection conception.
