Plot

[edit]

In 2005, Jason Leong was waiting for his father to pick him up at a coffee shop when he noticed a woman was reading a magazine. Captivated by its cover, which featured Hạ Long Bay, he approached the woman and asked about the magazine. The woman was Rachel Tsai, the editor-in-chief of Destiny, a global lifestyle magazine. She asked Jason to sit together and showed him the magazine, further sparking his interest. Rachel then told him that she had to leave, giving the magazine to him as a parting gift and wishing that he could find joy in it.

19 years later, Jason is the editor-in-chief of Destiny. He helms the editorial team which includes managing editor Tina Halim, senior travel editor Delvin Gunadi, food editor Rendra Tomo, senior fashion editor Stella Köhler and intern Fay Noella, home and design editor Cissie Sardi, art director Anna Ardiwilaga, and fashion stylist Xavier Kim. In a meeting with Angga, the CEO of Destiny Media Group, and Hardian, the group's managing director, Jason is informed of the discontinuation of the magazine due to declining profits and popularity. Angga adds that he plans to acquire the rights to Hello! to replace Destiny. Presented with a slideshow, Jason notices that the decline was not a steady, and that the popularity drop only occurred in January and April when a competitor featured Korean boy group BTS and Sezairi, respectively. He asks the two to give the team a chance, and Angga gives him a deal: the company expects to see profit and popularity rises with the upcoming July issue; otherwise, it will be the magazine's last issue.

The next day, the team has a meeting concerning the fate of the magazine. Jason tells the group that they need to feature a high-profile celebrity if they want Destiny to gain more popularity. After a discussion, the team decides to feature and interview Bunga Citra Lestari—who happens to be one of the magazine's friends. They will also feature three more figures, including award-winning barista Mikael Jasin who has previously been in contact with Rendra. To further grab readers' attention and gain more exposure, Jason requests Delvin, Stella, and Rendra to make special thematic round-ups in addition to their respective regular sections. Cissie, who has already established a theme for her section, is informed that the sales team has made a deal with some brands, which involves in-depth reviews through product testing. Tina adds that the reviews will result in the page addition for the home and design section. Jason then asks her to come up with a new theme around the products, reminding her that the deal brings profit to the company—something they need to ensure the magazine's survival. Cissie reluctantly agrees.

The team begins working on the issue.

Anna and Tina work on the pagination, and send the draft to Jason. The latter tells the two that the number of pages

One evening, Jason sees Delvin at his desk and tells him to go home as it is already late. In the elevator, both awkwardly attempt to make a small talk. The elevator suddenly stops and the lights go off, and the two scream for help while knocking on the doors. Delvin then turns on the flashlight on his phone. While waiting for the rescue, Jason and Delvin talk about their lives and eventually bond over their strained relationships with their fathers. Delvin admits that he misses his childhood sometimes. Jason attempts to console him, telling Delvin that he misses his childhood too sometimes and that he wishes everything was different. The lights go back on and the rescue team is finally able to open the elevator doors. Delvin thanks Jason for listening to his story before the two part.

The next day, Cissie receives a number of devices to review. An incident happens when she tests a Roomba, which results in the malfunctioned device knocking over Xavier's fish bowl. Panicking, she moves Xavier's goldfish to Anna's coffee mug, only to realise that the mug is still filled with coffee. Xavier comes and, horrified, rushes to rescue the fish, damaging his Zegna cashmere sweater in the process. At Cissie's suggestion, the duo take the dying fish to Dr. Egar, Xavier's veterinarian neighbour, but it is too late. Heartbroken, he asks Cissie to leave him alone and walks home sobbing.

Delvin is informed of the unveiling of Rosewood Jakarta. He is then tasked to attend a press conference for the hotel's launch and interview Jehezkiel Gunadi, one of the co-owners of the hotel. Unbeknown to the others, Jehezkiel is Delvin's estranged father to whom he hasn't talked for years. Unwilling to meet his father, Delvin initially plans to hand the task over to Rendra, but decides not to upon learning that Rendra is going to Yui concert. He confesses to Tina that Jehezkiel is his father and that he feels conflicted about interviewing him. Tina promises that she will keep it a secret and accompany him to the press conference if Delvin agrees to conduct the interview.

Still hurt by the death of his goldfish, Xavier decides to take a leave and asks Fay to help him with the pull letters. Fay, who is on the train, begins to write the drafts. Unaware that she has lost her mobile service since the train passed Tanah Kusir public cemetery, she sends the drafts to each representative of the brands Xavier has listed for her. She quickly shuts her MacBook off as the train arrives at Tanah Abang station.

The day before the cover photoshoot, Xavier and Fay are anxious because they have not received any responses from the fashion brands. They inform the team of the situation and Stella decides to contact representatives of each brand directly, including Daniella. To her dismay, they tell her that they have not received any pull letters. Stella asks if Xavier has actually sent the letters, and the latter admits that he has asked Fay to help him with the letters. It is then revealed that Fay's e-mails failed to send as she lost the mobile service while on train. With no permission to loan the clothes, the team cannot proceed with the photoshoot tomorrow. Stella calls Bunga's manager, explains the situation, and asks if she can do the photoshoot on a different day. The manager tells Stella that Bunga is leaving for Europe in two days and will not return to Indonesia until the end of the month. Realising that the photoshoot has to be cancelled, Stella puts the blame on Xavier for not taking care of the pull letter himself and subsequently ruining the editorial agenda. Fay, overcome with guilt, apologises to Xavier, only to be dismissed by the latter.

Tina and Delvin attends the press conference at the Treasury Tower. Jehezkiel notices Delvin among the audience. Delvin tries to participate in the Q&A session, but gets ignored by Jehezkiel. When he finally manages to ask a question, Jehezkiel pokes fun at his question, leaving him humiliated. At the backstage, Delvin confronts Jehezkiel about his action. Jehezkiel dismisses Delvin, telling him that he is busy and cannot talk to him. Delvin then tells his father that he has been fed up with his negligence and selfishness all this time, blaming him for the death of his mother. Angered, Jehezkiel slaps his son, not knowing that Tina and some other reporters witness the situation. He tells him to grow up, and Delvin vows that he will never acknowledge him as his father again before leaving.

Anxious that the team cannot make it on time, Jason schedules a meeting in the afternoon. He asks the team to share some updates and becomes furious upon learning that they had to cancel the cover photoshoot. Anna shows him a print proof of some sections of the magazine, including Rendra's dining round-up and Stella's fashion sections. Displeased with the result, Jason demands a major rework on the sections. He adds that the team hasn't put enough effort into their work, adding more fuel to the fire. Enraged, Stella retorts that the team has worked really hard all this time, yet Jason has never truly appreciated their effort. Rendra tries to de-escalate the situation, assuring Jason that he will revise his work, but Stella asserts that there will be no revision. Instead, she asks Jason if he really cares about his co-workers. Tina comes late and is immediately questioned about the press conference and the interview. She explains the incident that happened to Delvin, further infuriating Jason. He demands the team to call Delvin back to the office. Tina reveals to the team that Jehezkiel is Delvin's father, and the incident has left the latter deeply hurt, but Jason insists that Delvin has to return to the office and take responsibility, much to her chagrin. Tina points out that as an editor-in-chief, Jason has been selfish, inconsiderate, and ungrateful. Jason defends himself by saying that he only wants the best for the team. Anna then asks the team members to raise their hand if they agree with Tina. Jason is left speechless when everyone, except Rendra, raises their hands. Stella tells everyone to leave the room, but Rendra decides to stay. Jason asks Rendra why he didn't raise his hand earlier, and the latter says he believes that Jason is actually a good person, recalling that he got the job thanks to him. Before leaving, Rendra thanks Jason for all the support he has shown and wishes him good luck in his future endeavours.

The team, except Jason, Delvin, and Rendra—the latter goes to Yui concert, decides to have dinner together. At the restaurant, they take turn talking about how Jason has been treating them all this time. However, Fay tells the group about how Jason has helped her since she joined the team, and the rest begins to realise that, despite his icy and rationalist attitude, Jason has actually contributed to their personal success and development in the company. Stella admits that she is not always confident of her skills, and direct notes and suggestions from Jason have helped her learn to become a better editor. Tina later reveals that in a conversation with the HR representative, the latter said that Jason wanted to get Fay promoted to a junior fashion editor, and Cissie, Anna, and Rendra to seniors. His request, however, has not been confirmed by Angga and Hardian.

Delvin returns to the empty office and finds Jason in his room. He enters the room, apologises for failing to propose an interview with Jehezkiel, and asks about what happened during the meeting. Jason asks him to leave, but Delvin insists to know. The distraught Jason begins to screams in frustration and throw things out of anger. Delvin attempts to calms Jason down by hugging him. Jason cries on Delvin's shoulder, apologising for not being a good supervisor, then asks the latter to leave him alone after regaining his composure, promising that he will be okay.

While walking to the subway station, Cissie and Anna look at the office tower and notice that the lights in Jason's room are still on. Using her phone camera, Anna zooms in close enough to see the silhouette of Jason standing by his window. She takes a photo and sends it to everyone separately. Still at the office, Delvin leaves a voice note to the others, saying that Jason has been locking himself in his room, breaking down in tears while re-reading past issues of Destiny. Delvin begs everyone to think about the reason they began their career with the magazine in the first place and give their best for the magazine's final issue.

Meanwhile, Tina returns to the Treasury Tower and manages to meet Jehezkiel in person. She confronts him about what happened earlier and asks him to apologise to Delvin. Jehezkiel responds by saying that he is not going to accept the interview request from Destiny and that he will not apologise to Delvin. He adds that Tina has no idea about what his family has gone through. A mother herself, Tina tells him that she once made a huge mistake that badly damaged her relationship with her daughter, and it took her ten years to make amends for her mistake and be forgiven. She also mentions that deep down, Delvin is missing his father as he still has a childhood photo of him and his parents on his desk, reminding Jehezkiel that reconciliation is always possible if he wants it.

The next morning, a janitor finds Jason sleeping at his desk in his office. She wakes him up and tells him that it's 10 AM. Surprised, Jason leaves his room to wash his face, only to have all eyes on him. The team, led by Tina, apologises to him for what happened during the meeting. Jason says that he has not done enough and apologises for not being a good leader. Stella replies that Jason has helped develop the team and admits that she should not have snapped yesterday. The team then hugs Jason, moving him to tears. Rendra suggests Jason leaving home to take a rest after noticing that he looks ill. Delvin offers to take him home and Jason asks Tina to take care of the team for the day.

Jason and Delvin arrive at the former's apartment. Delvin comments on the apartment's interior, but Jason immediately stops him. He confronts Delvin about his father and asks him why he didn't tell him about it. Delvin admits that he didn't want to disappoint Jason, and the latter replies that he could have attended the press conference and conducted the interview himself had Delvin told him the truth. Jason reveals that Tina told him about the incident, and while he was upset that Delvin could not interview Jehezkiel, it was the incident that actually enraged him. Delvin asks why Jason would be enraged as the incident had nothing to do with him, and Jason replies that he does not want Delvin to get hurt. He then notices that Delvin is wearing the same clothes as yesterday and asks him why. Delvin nervously admits that he was really worried about Jason that he decided to stay overnight at the office. Realising that they love each other, the two hug and share a kiss.

At the office, the team discusses new names for the cover. Tina says that they need people who can be interviewed and photographed within the next couple of days as they do not have much time left. Rendra suggests that the team features Yui, revealing that with special backstage access, he was able to meet her in person and even get her manager's contact information. He adds that post-concert, Yui is going to enjoy a vacation in Jakarta for a week, implying that a collaboration is possible as long as the team manages to plan the photoshoot as soon as possible. After seeing photos of Yui in various publications and learning that her last concert took the internet by storm, the team agrees to feature her in the upcoming issue. Rendra immediately contacts Yui's manager and Cissie offers to help find a studio for the photoshoot, but Xavier suggests doing the magazine's final cover photoshoot at the office as a tribute to Destiny, which everyone agrees with. Fay helps Xavier sending pull letters, this time making sure that they are delivered.

Delvin receives a phone call from Rosewood Jakarta's representative and is invited to the hotel. Jehezkiel meets him at the lobby and asks Delvin to come with him to a courtyard, where he shows him a large pond with a statue of a father, a mother, and a son. He reveals to Delvin that the statue was commissioned by him personally as a tribute to the family. Jehezkiel sincerely apologises to Delvin for his mistakes, admitting that he has not been a good father to him and that he wishes he can mend his relationship with his son. Delvin accepts his apology, saying that he misses his father. The two tearfully reconciles. Jehezkiel then tells Delvin that he is willing to be interviewed, but requests that Delvin makes it a father-and-son conversation. The latter happily agrees.

For the next couple of days, the editorial team is busy working on the issue. Xavier handles the photoshoot with the assistance of the team—including Jason who is present on set and buys everyone lunch. Stella and Rendra revise their respective sections. Delvin transcribes the audio recording of his conversation with Jehezkiel, smiling at the part where the latter reminisces about Delvin's childhood habit of eating toothpaste. Cissie and Fay decide to surprise Xavier with a desk makeover while the latter goes to return the borrowed clothes. Xavier pretends he dislikes the change, but immediately breaks his character after seeing Fay come close to tears, thanking the two for their kind gesture. Tina and Anna show Jason the latest version of the pagination. He asks them to add one more page dedicated to the team next to the editor's note. The team is then asked to share their thoughts on the magazine and send their own photos to be featured.

One day before the deadline, the team stays late at work for the final proofreading.

The team goes home for the day, feeling happy and sad at the same time. Rendra drives Stella home on his motorbike. She asks him what he will do if Destiny is really over. Rendra replies that if he cannot find a new job, he will probably return to Semarang and take care of a family business. Stella, fearing that she will lose him, tells Rendra that she will make sure that he gets a new job. Rendra asks her not to worry about him, but admits that he will miss her the most if the team is disbanded, making her cry. Jason asks if Delvin wants to come to his place. The latter politely refuses, saying that it may not be a good time, but promises that he will come on the weekend. Despite feeling disappointed, Jason respects Delvin's decision and replies that he will wait for him. To his surprise, Delvin suddenly comes to his apartment and tells Jason that it is already weekend since it is Friday evening. Jason laughs, and the two then hugs emotionally. At her apartment, Anna is viewing the final layout and _______.

Months later, Jason is making a latte art at Café Parisien when a group of customers enter the cafe. Veronica greets the customers, who are revealed to be Tina, Cissie, Anna, and Fay. Jason then joins the group. Tina asks if he enjoys his new hobby, and Jason says that he has been feeling happier since he began making latte art. Veronica thanks the group for featuring her cafe in the September issue of the magazine, implying that the team has successfully saved Destiny from discontinuation. Jason jokingly tells Veronica to deliver some croissants and canelés to the office in return for the feature.

Meanwhile, Xavier has just finished giving a bath to a foster Bichon Frisé puppy at his apartment. He is struggling to dry the puppy with a hair dryer when Egar arrives with some Baskin-Robbins. Egar tells Xavier that he should have waited for him first before giving the puppy bath. Xavier replies that he couldn't stand the sight of the pup's Nutella-covered fur. While playing with the pup, Egar asks if Xavier wants to move in with him, and the latter agrees as long as Egar lets him adopt the puppy. Egar agrees on one condition: the puppy must be named Nutella. Xavier is initially unsure about the idea since the puppy is female, but later thinks that it's a good name after realising that he can still call the puppy "Ella."

At Pacific Place, Stella and Rendra are hanging out. While walking by a Louis Vuitton store, Stella challenges Rendra to guess the price of a Louis Vuitton trunk on display. Rendra replies that whatever the real answer is, he does not have enough money to buy it for her, but is willing to save up for their marriage in the future. Stella flicks him, telling him to quit sweet talking. To her surprise, Rendra assures her that he is serious. She tells him to stop talking nonsense before smiling and holding his arm. They run into Daniella, and Stella introduces Rendra as her boyfriend.

Outside a FamilyMart, Delvin is checking his phone when a white cat approaches. He squats to pet it and quickly takes some photos of the feline after realising that it is an odd-eyed cat. His phone rings and he answers the phone call, revealed to be from Jehezkiel who asks about his whereabouts. The call ends just before Jason, now dating Delvin, arrives on a Honda motorbike to pick the latter up. He tells Jason that Jehezkiel has been waiting for them at August, asking him to drive faster as Delvin himself is already hungry. When asked if it is okay to wear a biker outfit to such a prestigious establishment, Jason nonchalantly replies, "Who cares? I know the owner, your dad approves of me, and you'll still love me anyway." Delvin blows raspberries and lightly punches Jason's arm, then hugs him.
