Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Name of article: (link) Eugen Steimle
  • Briefly describe why you have chosen this article to evaluate.
    • I chose this article because I found it interesting that the son of a pastor, and someone who came from a strict religious family could join the Nazi party and teach Nazi history and fundamentals to students who spoke German but were not german citizens. I also found it interesting that the amount of information in this article is so little. I would have thought a figure such as Eugen Steimle, or others like him, would have had more than two paragraphs of information.

Lead

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
  • Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
  • Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
  • Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?

Lead evaluation

[edit]

The Lead does include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic, kind of. The first sentence states Eugen's date of birth / death and that he was a German SS commander in the SD during the Nazi era. The Lead does include a brief description on the article's major section. Although, there is not a bunch of information about this topic in general so the Lead is very brief. The Lead does not seem to offer any new information that is not discussed in more detail as the article goes on. The Lead is very short, concise, and to the point. It offers the important, and general information that the reader would need to know first.

Content

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
  • Is the content up-to-date?
  • Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?
  • Does the article deal with one of Wikipedia's equity gaps? Does it address topics related to historically underrepresented populations or topics?

Content evaluation

[edit]

This articles content is relevant to the topic. However, there is not a whole lot of information given on this subject so the content is very short and limited. The content is also up to date for the most part. The article was last edited on November 18, 2019, which makes it less than 1 years old, and has not been updated since. I am wondering if new information about Eugen and his life is not being found, which is why this WIKI page has not been updated. I do not believe any content is missing or that the information that is offered does not belong. In my opinion, the content that is offered is relevant, and that the author used his resources to find all the relevant and important information about this topic and included it in the article.

Tone and Balance

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article neutral?
  • Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?

Tone and balance evaluation

[edit]

The article is neutral. It offers an outline of Eugen's life and his contributions to the Nazi regime. There are no claims that are overrepresented or underrepresented. This article is well rounded and offers a rounded amount of information. It does seem that this article is about his life and his story rather than the students he taught and their aftermath. This article does not attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or another. It does not offer any single sided positions or narratives that would sway the reader to take favor in one position or another.

Sources and References

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
  • Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
  • Are the sources current?
  • Are the sources written by a diverse spectrum of authors? Do they include historically marginalized individuals where possible?
  • Check a few links. Do they work?

Sources and references evaluation

[edit]

I do believe al the facts in this article are backed up by reliable sources. At the bottom of the page, the author listed his sources and it appears that the author used a german textbook and a french encyclopedia to retrieve the information from. It seems as though the information is thorough and relevant. I did search Eugen Steimle and a CIA database entry appeared as well as a couple other websites and article entries about him. However, they do all seem to say the same general information as what is already posted in this article. The sources are semi-current. The textbook that was used is from 2010, however the other resources are from 2007, and could be out of date. The links listed under the references do work.

Organization

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article well-written - i.e. Is it concise, clear, and easy to read?
  • Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors?
  • Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic?

Organization evaluation

[edit]

Overall, this article is well written and easy to follow. The article does not appear to have any grammatical or spelling errors. The article is well organized fort he small amount of information that is offered. If the article had more information, the author could have broken the paragraphs up into topics such as "Early Life", "Education", "Nazi", "Capture", "Trial & Conviction", but it does not appear that there is enough information offered about Eugen that would fill a need for that many subheadings.

Images and Media

[edit]

This article offers one picture total, a picture of Eugen Steimle. The picture of him that is displayed is well captioned with the statement "Eugen Steimle at the Einsatzgruppen Trial" as well as a caption with his date of birth, date of death, allegiances, service/branch, years of service, rank, unit, and his commands held. It gives an overall general details about his life. The image is located int eh upper right hand corner next to the summary and information about him. I believe that is in a good location for the view to continue to see his image as they read. I do with the author provided more images of either Eugen or the camps / students he taught, this would have offered a better insight into his life rather than just one image of him.

Guiding questions
  • Does the article include images that enhance understanding of the topic?
  • Are images well-captioned?
  • Do all images adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations?
  • Are the images laid out in a visually appealing way?

Checking the talk page

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic?
  • How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects?
  • How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class?

Talk page evaluation

[edit]

No conversations are going on behind the scenes that I could see. I could not see where the rating for this topic would be. This topic is apart of 4 different WIKI projects. These projects are relevant to Jewish History, Military History, and Germany. I have new discussed this topic specifically in any of my classes. I have, however, had classes based on WW2 and the Nazis and this education perspective and the Nazi teachers were never a topic that was taken about. Im assuming that is because there is not an extent of information reported or found on them, Probably because the Nazis burned their records (If they were ever kept).

Overall impressions

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What is the article's overall status?
  • What are the article's strengths?
  • How can the article be improved?
  • How would you assess the article's completeness - i.e. Is the article well-developed? Is it underdeveloped or poorly developed?

Overall evaluation

[edit]

The article could be improved with the addition of pictures. If the author could not find anymore information, they could have provided the reader with pictures of where Eugen taught, him in his Nazi uniform, something in addition to a picture of Eugen. I think the article has a strong start. If the author did more research and found more information that could be added, that would help to improve the article overall, but if no new information could be found, it is well written and well organized fort he reader to understand.
