Sarah "Sally" Hynes (1859–1938) was a pioneer botanist, teacher and feminist in New South Wales, Australia.

Early life and Education

Hynes was born 30 September 1859 in Danzig, Prussia, now Gda'nsk, Poland. Daughter of Captain William John Hynes R.N.R. (1831–1909) and Eliza Adeline, née Bell.^[1] Sarah was educated at Edinburgh Ladies College, London and Chichester College, Sussex. The Hynes family settled in Sydney, Australia about 1884, when Captain Hynes was offered a position as managing director of the Australasian Steam Navigation Co. Sarah graduated from the University of Sydney in 1891, only ten years after the University Senate allowed admission of women at the University. She was awarded a BA majoring in Botany.

Career

Miss Hynes was a botanist at Sydney Botanical Gardens for ten years and the first female member of the Linnean Society of New South Wales
