Fiji water has a large list of goals for the company to become more environmentaly friendly.[1] Fiji stated that they will do more than go carbon neutral, they are planning on going carbon negative. [2] What this means is that Fiji plans to make up for greenhouse gasses that are released during the production of their product.[3] Fiji plans to provide energy to its bottling plant by install a windmill in 2009.[4] They also plan to re route shipping patterns that will be more efficient.[5] Fiji also plans to change the packaging of their product and reduce the amount of plastic in the bottles by twenty percent by 2010.[6] [7] Fiji has also started The Fiji Water Foundation, which has helped raise money for the Yaqara Valley Watershed and the Sovi Basin. [8]Fiji, however, has been the subject of recent criticism about bottling and shipping water from Fiji considering that Fiji as a country is lacking clean drinking water in many areas.[9]

Aramark has big plans to become a more environmentally friendly company by begining new practices at 7 Major League Baseball statiums.[10] Glass, plastic and cardboard that is generated from game-day preparation will be recycled by Aramark in order to reduce waste. Along with this, they will also be recycling frying oil [11] Aramark also plans to switch to biodegratable utensils as well as more environmentally friendly cups and napkins that have been made from recycled fiber.[12] Aramark has also created PlanetEVERgreen, which is their commitment to the environment.[13] Waste management along with reduction and recycling, sustainable design and construction in facilities, guest education, and sustainable cusine make up PlanetEVERgreen's four key parts for environmental management.[14] When it comes to sustainable cusine, Aramark has big plans to change their seafood purchases to sustainable sources.[15] By 2018, the company hopes to have completed its transition for all Aramark operations across the US.[16]

Some environmental groups have complained that Exxon doesnt go as much for the environment as its competitors.[17]Twelve United States environmental and public interest groups have recently set up a nation wide boycott of ExxonMobil. [18]The groups are protesting ExxonMobil's support of artic drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.[19]Recently, ExxonMobil has been experimenting with new technologies to be used at a new plant in LaBarge, Wyoming. [20] The plan is to build a natural gas treatment plant and they will spent nearly $100 million testing it.[21] Exxon says that this new technology will be cheaper than what is being used currently [22] The new technology will be able to separate the carbon dioxide from the natural gas in an effort to keep the harmful gasses from being released back into the air [23] The company hopes to be able to build the plant in the summer of 2008 and have it running by late 2009.[24]

chrysler plans to improve gas efficiency in its vehicles in order to be more environmentally freindly. [25]Chrysler plans to improve their engines and have their new 2008 models be able to run on less cylanders then previous models required. This will boost the fuel efficiency by nearly 25%. [26] Chrysler has been criticized for being farther behind when its comes to the environment than its competitors. [27]Chrysler lacks the funds within the company alone to do much research and experimentation with environmentally friendly technologies. [28]Therefore, Chrysler has begun developing new technologies when it comes to hybrids together with GM and BMW. [29]

Whole foods was recently placed fifth on the Us Environmental Protection Agency’s list of Top 25 Green Power Partners. Whole foods also received the EPA Green Power Award in 2004 and 2005 and Partner of the Year award in 2006 and 2007. [30] Whole Foods market plans on purchasing 458 million kilowatt hours of wind energy credits. This will keep about 700 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions out of the atmosphere. This is the same as taking 60,000 cars of the road or planting 90,000 acres of trees. [31] Whole foods estimates that they distribute almost 150 million plastic bags annually. [32]In order to reduce waste, Whole foods has stopped offering these plastic shopping bags to their customers.[33] Plastic bags do not break down easily in a landfill, causing harm to the environment. [34] Instead, Whole foods sells reusable shopping bags for 99 cents and they also offer a paper shopping bag option.[35] The paper shopping bags are made from 100 percent recycled paper. The re-usable shopping bags are made from recycled plastic bottles[36] The switch to re-usable bags among Whole Foods Market customers looks to be promising. During trial runs, paper bag use only rose 10%. This means that the majority of customers tend to switch to re-useable.[37]

Wegmans has recently become the first supermarket to update their health standards regarding the seafood, specifically shrimp, thats sold in stores.[38] In order for the shrimp to be certified for sale in stores, suppliers must not use any type of antibiotics, pesticides, or fungicides in the raising of the shrimp. [39] The suppliers must also be able to demonstrate that they are mot causing any harm to natural habitats, and they must show they are reducing their harmful wastewater as much as possible. [40] Currently, Wegmans uses a supplier of shrimp in Belize that meets the majority of the companies standards. [41]

In 2007, Wegmans also introduced a 50-acre organic farm that sells its produce to nearby grocery stores. Wegmans hopes this will help the revival of locally grown produce in order to reduce "food miles", or in other words the distance that it takes food to go from the field to your dinner table.[42]

Aveda and the environment

[edit]

Aveda set an industry precedent by introducing an aerosol hairspray that has a net-zero impact on the Earth's climate and an award-winning low 35% VOC formula. Through a partnership with NativeEnergy, an organization that supports and builds renewable energy products, Aveda has helped fund wind turbines. Aveda claims that it purchases enough wind energy to power its primary manufacturing facility.[43] The company uses "sends sustainability surveys to publications to help decide where to place its ads".[44] Aveda has a "green" advertising campaign for 2008[45]The campaign is titled "Beauty is as Beauty Does". Aveda will change the in-store displays as well as print ads every 6 weeks.[46] Aveda's ads will focus on using post-consumer recycled materials as well as promoting the use of wind-energy[47]. Aveda's campaign slogan is "Connecting beauty, Environment and Well-Being".[48] Aveada uses all natural ingredients whenever possible and they package in recyclable containers[49]. Their products are absolutely free from animal testing.[50]
