Definition
[edit]Shin-byung is a Korean syndrome characterized by anxiety and physical complaints such as weakness, dizziness, poor appetite, and fear. Additional complaints include gastrointestinal problems, paranoia, anorexia, and insomnia. Dissociation(often referred to as the possession by an ancestral spirit)[1] may be present. It is attributed to possession by ancestral spirits.[2] Shin-byung is prevalant among Korean women. Intial stages of the syndrome involve somatic and anxiety complaints such as those listed above. Shin-byung is referred to as the divine illness. It is listed in the DSM-IV as a culture bound syndrome.
