Ahir Regiment is a demand made by the Yadav community. The purpose of which is to create a separate regiment for the Ahir caste in the Indian Army, Jat, Sikh, Rajput, Dogra, Maratha regiment has been formed on caste basis. The demand to form an Ahir regiment has been going on since 1956.

History of Ahir community and their demand for regiment

Ahir is a community in India, most of whose members identify as belonging to the Indian Yadav community as they consider the two words to be synonymous.

The Ahirs have been variously described as a caste, a gotra, a community, a caste and a tribe. They are found all over India but are particularly concentrated in the northern region.

The Ahirwal region, which includes the southern Haryana districts of Rewari, Mahendragarh and Gurgaon, and is associated with Rao Tula Ram, the Ahir hero of the 1857 rebellion, has traditionally contributed a large number of soldiers to the Indian Army.

The community was brought into the national limelight in 1962 after the story of the bravery of Ahir soldiers from Haryana at the Battle of Rezang La became widely known.

Ahirs were initially recruited in large numbers into the 19 Hyderabad Regiment, the predecessor of the Kumaon Regiment.

On 27 October 1945 permission was granted to rename the regiment and it became 19 Kumaon. After independence, it was named the Kumaon Regiment.

The 13th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, which gained fame at Rezang La, was the first battalion to be raised after independence in October 1948 with Kumaonis and Ahirs in equal proportion.

In 1960, after the transfer of Ahirs from 2 Kumaon and 6 Kumaon, 13 Kumaon became the first pure Ahir battalion in the Kumaon Regiment.

The Ahirs of 13 Kumaon, stationed at Rezang La in eastern Ladakh, under the command of Major Shaitan Singh, resisted the Chinese attack until the entire company of about 120 soldiers was wiped out.

Members of the community have long argued that Ahirs are entitled to a full infantry regiment in their name, not just two battalions in the Kumaon Regiment and a certain percentage in other regiments such as the Brigade of the Guards or the Parachute Regiment in the Infantry and Corps. Like in Artillery, Engineers, Signals and Army Service Corps.

In such a situation, now Kamal Nath has also written a letter to the PM in this matter. Let us tell you that the Yadav community has also talked about demonstrating in Bhopal in the coming days. In the past also there have been demonstrations many times in the country regarding this demand. While this demand has been raised even in the conferences of Yadav Samaj.
