You may say, "The world is a stage." In this case, I. A. Richards calls the world tenor and the stage vehicle. Others do otherwise. Still another way is to call the former qualified and the latter qualifier in parallel with Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure's signified and signifier pair. It does not matter, here, whether world is a signifier or signified.
