Economy
[edit]The economy of Cremona is deeply linked to the agricultural production of the countryside. Food industries include salted meat, sweets (torrone), vegetable
oils, grana padano, provolone and "mostarda" (candied fruit in spicy mustard-flavored syrup, served with meats and cheese). Heavy industries include steel, oil
and one electric plant. The river-port is a base for the barges transporting goods along the Po river.
Urban Planning
[edit]Urban planning became a nessicity for the town of Cremona in the 1990s. [1][2] This is due to Italian planning laws that, overtime, have been put into effect.[1]
[2] These laws outlined the need for sustainable urban planning of cities throughout Italy.[1] The need for urban planning was also spawned out of the increase
of urbanization that has taken place in Cremona. Due to its close location to Milan, urbanization of Cremona has taken place because of some decentralization
of Milan.[2] Planning committees have taken this information into consideration and the main intent of this urban planning to to ensure that Cremona's future
growth is ecologically sustainable.[2] This urban plan was implemented in three stages from 1994 and was continuing into the early 2000's.[2] It is important to
note that the province of Cremona became involved in the planning process in June of 1995 after phase one was completed.[2] Phase one was an information
gathering and interpenetration phase.[2] Phase two was when the town officials became involved in the process to make a smooth implementation process
happen.[2] Phase three was to set the plan into motion and continually gather data to make sure the plan was successful.[2]
Sustainability
[edit]Sustainability is an important factor when it comes to urban planning. Cremona relies on agriculture from both economical and cultural fronts.[2] Urban
planners have worked with the town officials to develop a suitable sustainability plan, so that the agricultural driven economy will thrive well into the future.[1]
