In North America, RePlay listed Magician Lord on their November 1990 issue as being the tenth most-popular arcade game for the previous x.[54] According to Chad Okada, a former SNK staffer, the game was a flop in arcades, but became the best-selling Neo Geo AES title at the time.[21][55] Japanese publication Micom BASIC Magazine ranked the Neo Geo CD version seventh in popularity in its November 1994 issue.[18] The game also received generally favorable from critics.[56][57][58]
