Jefferson Rock is a shale outcropping located in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The landmark was named for Thomas Jefferson, who once stood upon the rock and would later proclaim "this scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic."[1]
Geology
[edit]The "Harpers Formation", of which Jefferson Rock is comprised, dates back to the Cambrian period and consists of heavily deformed phyllitic shale, metasiltstone, and metasandstone from the shallow water sediment from the ancient Iapetus Ocean.
