Eric Johnson was raised in the post-war San Fernando Valley, and his art is symbolic of that time and place. Graduating summa cum laude from University of California, Irvine, he became a studio assistant to John Paul Jones, Craig Kauffman, and Tony DeLap. he has lived and worked in San Pedro, California since 1996.

Inspired by both art and science, Johnson creates composite works of pigment, wood, automotive lacquer, and resin. The handcrafted abstract works are sheathed in resin skins, often revealing glimpses of skeletal armatures and hidden architectures. Other influences have been the aerospace industry and ancestral boat builder heritage.

Johnson has spent decades working with polyester resin. Like many artists of his generation, he embraced the hot-rod culture of Southern California. He has made customized car bodies for the Porsche 962 and has lovingly overhauled vintage cars-as evidence by the two-toned 1939 Chevrolet panel truck and fire engine red 1934 Ford pickup that sit to one side of his studio. As often was the case for artists working in the 1970s, industrial products found their way into Johnson’s studio practice. “I’ve translated all that automotive knowledge into making my artwork”,” he says. “I use the full array of auto tools and pigments.” SCAPE southern california art projects + exhibitions https://scapesite.com/eric-johnson/

“Fundamentally, I believe the driving force behind my work lies in my fascination with scale and the exploration of the underlying principles of physics. Through abstracted DNA strands and the study of wavelength patterns, my artwork bears witness to this research." />

Criticism and commentary

[edit]

In 1975, Jeff Perone wrote in Artforum magazine about Linden's work in "Both Kinds: Contemporary Art in L.A.": "... Precious objects are precious objects and my personal preferences from Diebenkorn 1945, to Linden 1975 means the same thing; the works resemble each other closely, only Linden's a little more loose in technique and tighter in concept. It does not matter how far the distance traveled, chronologically or psychologically. The new looks like the old, and the good things, new or old, are tradition, as in the new tradition, a tradition that looks good. Linden is expressing himself, goddamnit."[1]
