John R New I joined Wikepedia as a new user in July 2006. I support the Wikipedian principle of self help and open source editing. Hopefully I haven't made too many gaffes although I still find issues with the querky navigation of the Wikipedia system and its syntax.

An overview of my background and interests. In professional life prior to 2008 I was a UK based senior local government manager leaving after 38 years progressing up the career ladder through various roles and Departments within seven authorities. By the end of my career in that field my specialism was IT/GIS and related admin systems including, latterly, the establishment of the NLPG. I had previously also been an LA side rep' within the national team setting up the New Roads and Street Works Act of 1991. Academically during my LA career I obtained an ONC & HNC in Public Administration together with a post-graduate level Diploma in Management Studies from what is now called Leeds Beckett University, but was then known as Leeds Polytechnic. The DMS was gained in 1983 and I have been a Member of the Chartered Management Institution (MCMI) since 1987.

Following departure from local government I completed a BA in Communication and Media studies at Bournemouth University (2:1 in 2016) and now work full time as a writer and transport historian/photographer, including acting as PRO for the Stephenson Locomotive Society. My prime interests remain railway history and industrial archaeology. I am an occasional published author on relevant subjects in connection with my current, full-time work and outside interests.

I joined Wikipedia to participate actively in the topic areas relevant to my historical research interests. This interest is the coal mining and related wagonways activity around Wollaton and Strelley and the history of early railways in general.
